Assistant Practitioner/Registered Nurse Associate – Eye Outpatients Department, Band 4 (Part-Time, Fixed Term)
Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is thrilled to offer an exciting opportunity to join our fast-paced Eye Outpatients Department.

About the Role
Location & Contract
- Part-time and fixed-term role
- Located across Southampton and Lymington hospitals (two sites)
- Clinics run Monday to Saturday
Department Overview
The Eye Outpatients department is dynamic and evolving, processing up to 200+ patients per session. As a large team of over 50 staff, agility, adaptability, and forward-thinking are key. Your role as a Band 4 Assistant Practitioner/Registered Nurse Associate will include:
- Supervising, coaching, and empowering peers
- Demonstrating exemplary professionalism and teamwork
- Maintaining a positive, trustworthy energy
- Being a role model in supporting staff development
While ophthalmic experience would be beneficial, training will be provided to ensure your success.
Key Requirements
- Medicine Management competency – essential
- Ability to thrive in a high-volume, compressed schedule

Qualifications & Competencies
Essential Criteria
Professional Registration
- Registered as a Nursing Associate on the NMC register
- OR
- Assistant Practitioner with a health-related Foundation Degree (e.g., in Health and Social Care)
- OR
- Overseas-based nursing registration equivalent to UK Academic Level 5

Foundational Competencies
- Numeracy and literacy to Level 2 qualification standard
- Proven ability to work under supervision in multidisciplinary team settings
- Experience with complex, sensitive patient information exchange
Desirable – but Not Required
- Medicine administration competency
- Additional acute care apprenticeship units aligned with UHS/Royal Alexandra Division
- Extended skills (e.g., venesection/dialysis cannulation)
