Assistant Project Manager
Location: Western Isles, Scotland (Office base available in Glasgow, Inverness, or Perth)
Contract: 12-Month Contract
Hours: 40 Hours per Week
Rate: £550-£600 per day
Working Pattern: Pre Construction – occasional travel to Western Isles, mainly office based
Construction – onsite required in Western Isles, accommodation + travel provided
The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Project Manager to join a major infrastructure programme delivering one of the UK's most significant energy transmission projects. This role will support the successful execution of a £500m+ civil and building works package as part of a large-scale transmission infrastructure development.
Reporting to a Senior Project Manager or Project Manager, you will play a key role in coordinating project activities, supporting contractor management, monitoring delivery performance, and ensuring works are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with programme requirements.
This position offers valuable exposure to complex construction delivery, NEC contract administration, stakeholder engagement, and multidisciplinary project interfaces within a large-scale infrastructure environment.
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery
- Support the end-to-end delivery of a major civil and building works package during the execution phase.
- Work closely with Project Managers, site teams, contractors, consultants, and key stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Assist in monitoring project performance against scope, programme, budget, quality, and safety objectives.
- Support coordination of construction activities across multiple workstreams and delivery partners.
- Track progress on site and contribute to resolving issues that could impact programme delivery.

Contractor & Site Management
- Monitor contractor performance against agreed programme milestones and delivery targets.
- Conduct regular site visits and inspections to review progress, quality standards, and safe working practices.
- Support the management of contractor interfaces and dependencies across the project.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with project specifications, standards, and regulatory requirements.
Commercial & Contract Administration
- Support the administration of NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts.
- Assist with the management of Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Change Control processes, and project communications.
- Maintain accurate project records and support commercial reporting activities.
- Liaise with internal commercial teams and external suppliers to support effective contract delivery.
Project Controls & Reporting
- Assist with project reporting, governance, and performance monitoring.
- Maintain risk registers, issue logs, action trackers, and project documentation.
- Support schedule reviews and programme updates.
- Prepare project reports, dashboards, and status updates for senior stakeholders.
Health, Safety & Environmental Management
- Promote a positive health, safety, and environmental culture across the project.
- Support compliance with Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations 2015 and other applicable legislation.
- Participate in safety audits, site inspections, and incident investigations where required.
- Ensure contractor activities are undertaken in accordance with company standards and industry best practice.

Stakeholder & Interface Management
- Coordinate interfaces between contractors, designers, consultants, and project stakeholders.
- Support engagement activities with local communities, landowners, regulatory bodies, and other interested parties as required.
- Facilitate effective communication across project teams to ensure alignment and timely decision-making.
Essential Requirements
- Experience supporting the delivery of civil engineering, construction, utilities, infrastructure, or major capital projects.
- Site-based project delivery experience within a construction environment.
- Understanding of construction health and safety legislation, including CDM 2015.
- Knowledge of project management principles, controls, and reporting processes.
- Experience working with NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts.
- Strong organisational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications and project reporting tools.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel frequently to site locations.
Desirable Requirements
- Degree or HNC/HND qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience within the energy, utilities, power transmission, or major infrastructure sectors.
- Practical experience administering NEC contracts.
- Knowledge of risk management, change control, and project governance processes.
- Working towards or holding a recognised professional qualification (APM, ICE, CIOB or equivalent).
