Assistant Project Manager – Substations (Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution)
About the Role
Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution (Power T&D) is seeking an enthusiastic and driven Assistant Project Manager to support the successful delivery of major electricity infrastructure projects at Laleham Substation.
Working closely with the Project Manager and wider team, you’ll play a critical role in planning, coordinating, and delivering substation construction and refurbishment—ensuring safe, timely, and budget-compliant execution. This is an ideal opportunity for professionals looking to advance their project management career within a leading infrastructure business in the UK.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Supporting the Project Manager in delivering substation projects from initiation to commissioning and handover.
- Assisting with project planning, programme management, and progress monitoring.
- Maintaining accurate project records, reports, and documentation.
- Coordinating site teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders to drive effective delivery.
- Supporting project governance, reviews, and compliance with reporting requirements.
- Assisting in risk, issue, and opportunity management.
- Monitoring performance against programme, quality, and cost targets.
- Supporting procurement and supply chain activities to ensure timely material/service delivery.
- Promoting Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm culture and ensuring adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and lessons learned activities.

Who We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Experience supporting the delivery of engineering, construction, or infrastructure projects.
- Understanding of project management principles and controls.
- Experience implementing safe systems of work.
- Ability to manage risks and change processes.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Collaborative approach in multidisciplinary teams.
- Robust organisational and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
Desirable:
- Experience in power, utilities, substations, transmission, or distribution projects.
- Membership or attainment towards a professional body (e.g., APM) or qualifications such as:
- APM PFQ
- PMQ
- Degree or equivalent in Construction, Engineering, Project Management, or related field.
- CSCS/SSSTS certification (or equivalent).
- Full UK driving licence.
