Assistant Project Manager - Defence

Assistant Project Manager (Civil Works) – HMNB Devonport Project

About the Role

Mace, a leader in infrastructure and built environment consultancy, is delivering a major civils package of works as part of a critical infrared upgrade at HMNB Devonport. We’re seeking a talented Assistant Project Manager to support safe and successful delivery across planning, execution, and close-out phases.

Security clearance (SC eligibility) is mandatory. Existing clearance is a strong advantage.


Key Responsibilities

You’ll play a dynamic role in overseeing and facilitating delivery, collaborating closely with key stakeholders:

  • Package Management & Delivery

    • Support the Naval Staff Survey Team (NSST) & Enabling Works Package Manager in day-to-day tasks and objectives for the berth wall strengthening project.
    • Assist from design through to close-out, ensuring timely, budgeted, and compliant delivery.
  • Design & Technical Oversight

    • Engage in design development, reviewing submissions from consultants and contractors.
    • Monitor contractor-provided design deliverables and safe systems of work compliance.
  • Procurement & Contract Administration

    • Collaborate with the commercial team during subcontractor procurement, including reviews/appointments.
    • Administer NEC4 contract processes, leveraging tools like CEMAR for contract administration.
  • Construction Coordination & Leadership

    • Support construction managers with on-site progress,ほど検討bal monitoring and reporting to meet the project programme.
    • Manage and review contract reporting (dashboards, updates, performance).
    • Lead and attend progress meetings with clients and the supply chain, including chairing when required.

  • Technical & Quality Assurance
    • Oversee key quality sign-offs, Final Acceptance Testing (FAT), and technical documentation submission.
    • Review changes, RFIs (Requests for Information), TQs (Technical Queries), and their impacts on scope/programme.

Requirements & Qualifications

To thrive in this role, you must bring:

  • Experience & Technical Expertise

    • Critical experience in reinforced concrete construction and temporary works.
    • Knowledge of engineering design processes and methodology.
    • Familiarity with NEC4 contracts, procurement procedures, and project management systems (e.g., CEMAR).
  • Regulated Industry & Legislation Awareness

    • Experience in regulated environments (nuclear, aviation, rail or similar).
    • Proficiency with design & quality standards (Eurocodes, British Standards).
  • Technical Health & Safety Knowledge

    • Clear understanding of HASAWA 1974, CDM 2015, PUWER 1998, and LOLER 1998.
  • Soft Skills & Professional Standards

    • Strong organisation and time management capabilities.
    • Excellent stakeholder communication, collaboration, and reporting.
  • Certifications & Education

    • Degree, HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent professional qualification.
    • Valid CSCS card.
