Job Title: Assistant Project Manager - Water Sector Design
Location: Manchester, UK
Contract Type: Permanent
Work Pattern: Primarily office-based with flexible hybrid working
The Role
You will play a key role in supporting the successful delivery of multidisciplinary engineering design projects within the water sector, helping to keep everything on track from programme and cost through to quality and client satisfaction. This role is ideal for someone with early project or design experience who is ready to move into a more structured project management position, with clear progression toward Project Manager level.
You will work closely with senior engineers and project managers to coordinate design delivery, manage programmes, and ensure projects run smoothly from concept through to completion. Design project experience is necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting the management of multidisciplinary water design projects
- Assisting in delivering projects on time, within budget and to required quality standards
- Helping coordinate design teams and supply chain partners
- Updating and maintaining project programmes
- Supporting the administration of NEC and other contract requirements
- Assisting with commercial tracking, variations and change management
- Maintaining regular communication with clients and internal stakeholders
- Reporting project progress and performance to senior team members
- Supporting the preparation of tenders and technical proposals
- Ensuring effective collaboration across engineering disciplines

About You
You already have some exposure to engineering or project environments and are looking to build a long-term career in project management.
Essential
- 2-5 years experience in one or more of the following:
- Engineering design in a regulated industry
- Project management (design only)
- Design coordination / design management
- Degree or HND in an engineering or related discipline
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- Genuine interest in developing a career in project management
Desirable
- Experience within the water sector
- Understanding of multidisciplinary engineering projects
- Exposure to NEC or similar contract forms
- Awareness of project programmes, cost tracking and change management
- Experience working with cross-functional or distributed teams
- Basic understanding of commercial and contractual principles
