Role Purpose
The Assistant Project Worker (APW) plays a vital role in delivering GAMH’s community-based mental health support services. The position is responsible for:
- Assisting in service delivery to meet the needs of service users and carers.
- Supporting individuals in leading fulfilling lives through recovery-focused, strengths-based approaches.
- Facilitating group activities within the GAMH Community Hub and wider services, creating safe, inclusive spaces where participants can:
- Build social connections.
- Develop skills and confidence.
- Reduce isolation.
- Support peer-led recovery journeys.
- Encouraging co-produced group programmes, where service users shape activities and take active leadership roles.
This role is key to fostering peer support, resilience, and wellbeing within our communities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Service Delivery
- Conduct and assist in assessment processes, including:
- Identifying strengths and support needs.
- Assessing risk factors.
- Determining suitability for GAMH services.
- Work in partnership with service users and carers to:
- Set personalised goals.
- Review outcomes as defined by the individuals (under Project Worker supervision).
- Support the planning, development, and delivery of:
- Recovery-focused groups, workshops, and wellbeing activities.
- Activities that promote confidence, self-management, social connection, creativity, and emotional wellbeing.
- Facilitate group sessions in:
- The GAMH Community Hub.
- Community settings.
- Ensure activities are:
- Inclusive, trauma-informed, and strengths-based.
- Responsive to participants’ needs and interests.
- Encourage active participation in co-producing group activities, helping individuals:
- Develop skills and confidence.
- Build peer support networks.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with:
- Service users.
- Carers.
- To encourage engagement, recovery, and social inclusion.
- Connect service users and carers with:
- Supportive social networks.
- Stronger community connections.
- Collaborate with:
- Colleagues.
- Partner organisations.
- To design a diverse programme of meaningful group opportunities aligned with recovery principles.
- Provide carer support, including:
- Information sharing.
- Signposting to resources and services.
- Participate in/facilitate other support opportunities as directed by senior staff.

2. Practice Development
- Contribute to a team-based approach in developing and delivering Personal Support Plans, in partnership with:
- Service users.
- Carers.
- Relevant stakeholders (under Project Worker direction).
- Support evolution of groupwork approaches, ensuring:
- Activities encourage participation, peer support, and recovery.
- Ensure compliance with:
- Team working practices.
- Participation, inclusion, communication, and safeguarding standards.
- Contribute to:
- Creation, implementation, and review of support plans.
- Work collaboratively with:
- Service users, carers, and external agencies.
- To promote choice, independence, wellbeing, and recovery.
- Review achievement of support goals with service users, then:
- Provide feedback to the Project Worker and wider team.
- Work with colleagues to maintain:
- Compliance with GAMH systems, procedures, and practices.
- Challenge poor practice and report:
- Any concerns, malpractice, or issues to the appropriate person using organisational procedures.
3. Safeguarding
- Attend mandatory Safeguarding training to:
- Understand key safeguarding principles.
- Implement GAMH Adult Protection/Child Protection policies.
- Promote the protection of carers, ensuring awareness of:
- Legal and organisational requirements for safeguarding adults and children.
- Act in accordance with Safeguarding policies, ensuring:
- Protective measures for individuals from harm or abuse.

4. Health and Safety
- Adhere to lone working practices, ensuring:
- Safe and effective individual engagement.
- Comply with:
- GAMH’s Health and Safety policies.
- Procedures protecting employees’ health, safety, and security.
5. Data Protection (GDPR)
- Adhere to GAMH’s Data Protection and Data Management Policy, ensuring:
- Personal data is processed, stored, and shared responsibly under:
- GDPR 2016 regulations.
- Confidentiality agreements.
- Legal and organisational requirements.

- Maintain records and reports that are:
- Accurate, concise, objective, legible, and understandable.
- Uphold data protection principles, including:
- Recording and sharing information only as permitted.
6. Professional Development & Compliance
- Upskill continuously, maintaining personal and professional development records per:
- Legal requirements.
- Organisational standards.
- Ensure compliance with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) Code of Practice.
- Be available for out-of-hours work as required.
- Perform additional duties as directed by senior staff.
Person Specifications
required:
- Commitment to a recovery-focused, strengths-based approach.
- Experience (or willingness to develop skills) in:
- Group facilitation (e.g., workshops, support groups).
- Community-based mental health support.
- Motivational interviewing or person-centred practice. -Ability to build rapport with diverse individuals, including those experiencing:
- Severe mental health challenges.
- Isolation or social exclusion.
- Willingness to:
- Work with young people and vulnerable groups.
- Foster inclusive, trauma-informed environments.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to collaborate with carers, service users, and multi-agency teams.
- Conflict resolution and mediation skills.
- Flexibility and openness to continuous learning.
- Familiarity with GDPR, safeguarding, and social care frameworks (desirable but not essential). -Will to uphold ethical practice, professional boundaries, and organisational values.
