About the Role
The Assistant Public Defender – Family Court is responsible for representing indigent clients in family law matters, including child custody, visitation, child abuse/neglect, termination of parental rights, and other familial legal proceedings. This role requires a strong commitment to advocacy, ethical practice, and compassionate client care in a fast-paced legal environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal representation for indigent clients in family court, ensuring access to justice.
- Conduct case evaluations and create case strategies informed by relevant laws and precedents.
- Prepare pleadings, motions, and discovery requests within statutory deadlines.
- Represent clients in court hearings, mediations, and settlement conferences.
- Collaborate with judges, social workers, and other legal professionals to protect client interests.
- Draft and file petitions, complaints, answers, and motions in accordance with court rules.
- Advocate for fair resolutions in matters of custody, support, and guardianship.
- Maintain professional integrity, confidentiality, and comply with legal and ethical guidelines.

Qualifications
- Law Degree (J.D.) from an accredited institution.
- Licensed to practice law in the applicable jurisdiction (admission to a state bar).
- Active membership in the state bar (or able to apply and activate before assuming duties).
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills in family law practice.
- Proficiency with legal research and case law interpretation.
- Typically preferred: Background in family law or legal aid work.
- Preferred: Two or more years of litigation experience.
Special Requirements
- This is a public sector position with clients who are financially disadvantaged.
- Must adhere to confidentiality agreements and ethical standards of the legal profession.
- Required to pass a background check and drug test if selected.
