Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Assistant Quantity Surveyor Vacancy – VolkerStevin

The Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated and aspiring Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our team and advance your career in a dynamic, growing business.
⚠️ Security Clearance is mandatory for this role – UK National status is an essential requirement.
Role Outline
Reporting to the Quantity Surveyor/Project Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor, the Assistant Quantity Surveyor will provide key support to enhance profitability and project efficiency across procurement, risk management, and commercial reporting.
Key Accountabilities
General
- Assist in the procurement process to maximise profit margins while ensuring subcontract tender submissions are timely and compliant with company policy.
- Maintain awareness of project-specific contractual obligations.
- Act in the company’s best commercial interests at all times.
- Demonstrate professionalism in all dealings.
- Mentor and support trainee Quantity Surveyors on the assigned project.
Tasks by Phase
Tender & Pre-Construction
- Collaborate closely with the Bid Team to support tender development.
- Thoroughly review and understand conditional requisition papers, tender documentation, and allowances.
- Acquaint yourself with risk logistics and commercial scopes.
- Assist in establishing the initial profit and loss projections for the project.
Subcontract Management
- Draft and review subcontract documentation.
- Ensure accurate quantification of subcontractor works.
- Maintain validation records for subcontractor invoices, verifying their compliance with contracts and company policies.
- Prepare subcontract payment notifications complying with the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act (LDEDC) 2009.
- Support subcontractor appraisal processes for continual performance assessment.
- Issue subcontract payments upon verification that work execution meets contractual quality standards.
- Compile and articulate subcontractor liabilities and accruals.

Procurement
- Conduct comprehensive procurement comparisons across potential subcontractors.
- Adhere strictly to established subcontract schedules and material procurement policies.
Commercial Reporting
- Record and log all site activities, tracking progress and contractual milestones.
- Assist in producing monthly commercial reports, ensuring adherence to company timeframes.
- Validate the supporting documentation for monthly commercial reporting in line with commercial policy.
- Monitor and ensure timely subcontract payments based on accurate valuations.
- Proactively identify risks and flag potential issues to the manager for escalation.
- Minimise waste throughout procurement and delivery.
- Develop expertise in interpreting programme types such as weekly, as-built, epochal, target, and milestone contracts.
About You
Required Qualifications & Expertise
✅ Essential:

Current pursuit of an accredited qualification from the:
- Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
- Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
- Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES)

Alternatively, a degree with strong technical (numerical/engineering) underpinning (e.g., civil engineering, structural engineering, building construction or urban land studies).
✅ Desirable:
- Degree-level qualification in Quantity Surveying with relevant industry experience.
