Assistant Research Professor (Grade 9): Multimodal Machine Learning for Breast Cancer Research
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, ambitious, talented and highly motivated machine learning scientist to join our team within the Precision Breast Cancer Institute (PBCI), led by Professor Jean Abraham, and make a real impact in the fight against breast cancer.
Breast cancers comprise complex biological processes that function in compound microenvironments of malignant tumour cells. As such, incorporating and simultaneously analysing multimodal data can offer a better understanding of the underlying cancer mechanisms, ultimately leading to more accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning for cancer patients. Breast cancer research produces complex multimodal data at different scales, including clinical, imaging (radiology and digital pathology), and genomic or transcriptomic profiles. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in revolutionising patient care through the design, development, and application of novel machine learning methods to analyse and interpret large-scale multimodal data using samples primarily derived from large clinical trials and studies. The role will also involve working closely with renowned scientists, liaising with project teams and external science users, contributing to research publications, and collaborating with clinical experts to optimise the interpretation and use of these data.
At PBCI, we believe in fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. We value teamwork, respect, and open communication, creating a space where ideas thrive and individuals flourish. Together, we will support and inspire one another as we work towards our shared goal of improving breast cancer treatments and outcomes. Together, we will shape the future of breast cancer research and drive impactful and rapid change.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
