Assistant Spatial Planner

Assistant Spatial Planner (Yorkshire North-East) – National Highways

About the Role

National Highways has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Spatial Planner to join our multi-disciplinary team in the Yorkshire North-East region.

The Assistant Spatial Planner will play a crucial role in the town and country planning system, ensuring that new developments are well located, planned for, and their travel demands are sustainable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work alongside Spatial Planners to assess the transport-related impacts of development proposals and local planning strategies.
  • Collaborate with local authority partners and developers to identify mitigation measures required for our road network.
  • Manage your own caseloads, coordinating internal responses and supporting our organisational positioning in planning consultations.

Specific Duties

  • Assist the team in securing funding opportunities for road network improvements via developer contributions and the Housing Infrastructure Fund.
  • Act as a statutory consultee in the planning system, managing specialist consultant support and escalating complex cases to senior planners.
  • Evaluate development proposals to determine their potential impact on our road network, ensuring responses remain measured, robust, and informed.
  • Prepare planning consultation responses, reports, and Development Consent Order submissions.
  • Provide ongoing stakeholder engagement, attending meetings and forums to share guidance on local planning strategies and National Highways’ emerging strategies.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
