If you're looking to move your underwriting career beyond processing into a role that gives you genuine exposure to underwriting decisions, broker relationships and complex commercial property risks, this is an opportunity with real long-term value.
You will work alongside experienced underwriters in Manchester, learning how risks are assessed, structured and managed within a specialist commercial property portfolio.
The role offers a credible route into underwriting, with structured development, support towards professional qualifications and the chance to take on more responsibility as your technical knowledge grows.
The opportunity
This is not a role where you will be kept at arm’s length from the underwriting team; you will be closely involved in the day-to-day management of the portfolio, supporting new business and renewals, speaking with brokers and helping ensure each risk is handled accurately and efficiently.
It will suit someone who wants to understand how underwriting decisions are made and build the technical foundations for a successful career in commercial insurance.
What you will be doing
- Supporting underwriters with new business, renewals and mid-term transactions.
- Recording quoted and bound risks accurately across underwriting systems and internal logs.
- Liaising with brokers to obtain information, resolve queries and progress transactions.
- Reviewing underwriting files to ensure information is complete and accurate.
- Producing portfolio reports and carrying out research on individual risks.
- Monitoring premiums, outstanding balances and aged debt alongside credit control.
- Supporting the management of binders, lineslips, bordereaux and declarations.
- Contributing to wider underwriting and operational projects as your experience develops.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
