The Role: Assistant Voice Officer
Contract Details
- Hours: 37 hours per week
- Duration: Fixed-term contract until 31st March 2028
We are committed to children’s participation, ensuring their voices are heard, respected, and central to decisions affecting them. As part of our Working Together Strategy & Families First Programme, we are recruiting an Assistant Voice Officer to join the Voice & Engagement Team.

Who You’ll Work With
You’ll collaborate across:
- Families First
- Children in Need (CIN) & Child Protection (CP)
- Children with SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities)
Your role is to amplify children’s perspectives, fostering relationships where they feel supported, heard, and empowered to share their experiences. Their agency will be central to individual care plans and service improvement across Sandwell.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct direct engagement and participation work with children and young people, including home visits.
- Develop creative and accessible methods to grasp children’s views and experiences.
- Enable young people to participate with leaders, councils, and forums.
- Lead participation groups, events, and activities tailored to their needs.
- Work closely with social workers, Families First teams, SEND services, and external partners.
- Record and present children’s voices clearly in reports and decision-making processes.
- Contribute to service co-production and continuous improvement.
- Support practitioners in embedding participation into their practice.
- Develop resources, materials, and opportunities to strengthen children’s rights and engagement.
Requirements & Skills
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
- A passion for children’s rights, voice, and meaningful participation.
- Direct experience working with vulnerable groups, especially those in:
- Families First
- CIN or CP pathways
- SEND settings
- Excellent communication skills for various ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Diligent ability to build trust, respect, and understanding with children.
- Expertise in advocacy, engagement, and rights-based practice.
- Resilience, empathy, and commitment to inclusive, child-centred approaches.
- Strong written and digital skills, with the ability to represent children’s views effectively.
- A relevant qualification or equivalent experience:
- NVQ Level 3 in Children’s Care, Play, and Learning (or equivalent).
- Subject-specific experience or training (e.g., SEND advocacy, child participation).
