Senior Air Quality Specialist (International) – Buro Happold
Could you help continue the expansion of Buro Happold’s air quality services in the international market? If you have a strong background in air quality consultancy and can be based out of one of our UK offices a couple of days a week, this role could be an excellent opportunity to play a key role in an expanding, globally focused team.
Key Responsibilities
Core Role Focus
The position will support the growth of Buro Happold’s air quality offering in international markets, including the Middle East, Africa, and other emerging markets, while working alongside our global air quality lead.
Primary duties include:
- Providing technical expertise across a diverse portfolio of overseas projects
- Supporting business development and strategic direction of the air quality service line
- Managing and delivering air quality inputs for large-scale international masterplanning projects
- Serving as a client-facing specialist, advocating for SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment) and EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) air quality chapters
- Leading ambient and indoor air quality monitoring plans for residential, commercial, industrial, and energy sectors
- Supporting regional planning frameworks in the UAE and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)
- Expanding the service line into new emerging international markets
Key Projects
- Contributing to projects such as EXPO, Qiddiya, and Diriyah Gate (Saudi Arabia)
- Working on GIGA-scale infrastructure projects across multiple continents
Business Development & Learning Opportunities
- Participating in proposal development for emerging markets
- Engaging in international client relationship management
- Contributing to marketing strategy and business development initiatives

Requirements
Essential
- Track record of leading large-scale air quality design support for international masterplans (orienting concepts towards positive air quality outcomes)
- Experience in air quality input for overseas SEAs/EIAs, demonstrating proficiency in IFC (International Finance Corporation) requirements
- Strong technical capability in atmospheric dispersion modelling; expertise in ADMS-road, ADMS 6, or AERMOD
- Client-facing experience—providing direct advice to clients and collaborators, including ne Crypto-less contracts
- Proficiency in ESIA (Environmental and Social Impact Assessment) standards and regional frameworks
- Experience working with capital lenders (e.g., EBRD, IFC)
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to review/interpret air quality data
- Degree in mathematics, physics, chemistry, environmental science, geography, or similar, with preference for a related master’s degree
- Full Membership of the Institute of Air Quality Management or equivalent qualifications
Desirable
- Experience with indoor air quality, including certifications such as LEED, WELL, or Envision
- Insight in dust and odour risk assessments, along with ecological expertise
- Proficiency in decision-making support tools using GIS—QGIS or ArcGIS
- Implementation of monitoring plans using passive and automatic techniques, as well as offline analysis
- Track-record of delivering profitable tenders with strong client engagement
- Mentoring or team coaching experience, fostering leadership among junior air quality staff
Work Arrangement & Travel
- Hybrid working model, with UK office-based commitment (2–3 days per week)
- Eligible for international client travel, enhancing global engagement
