Associate Air Quality Specialist – International Expansion
Do you have a strong background in air quality consultancy and a passion for shaping a globally focused team? At Buro Happold, we’re looking for a strategic and proactive specialist to help drive the expansion of our air quality services in international markets, including the Middle East, Africa, and emerging regions.
As we work on some of the largest-scale GIGA projects in the world—such as EXPO, Qiddiya, and Diriyah Gate, alongside key frameworks in the UAE and KSA—we need someone who can support our organic growth with both technical expertise and business development skills.
The Role Based in one of our UK offices (with hybrid working flexibility), this position will involve managing and delivering air quality inputs for large-scale international masterplanning projects, as well as supporting Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). You will work closely with our global air quality lead, contributing to technical excellence, business development, and strategic growth.
Could You Be Our Associate? This is What We Need
You will lead a mix of technical, operational, and business-facing tasks, including:

Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
- Leading air quality assessments for international masterplans, guiding designs toward positive air quality outcomes
- Providing specialist input for SEA and EIA air quality chapters, ensuring compliance with international standards (EBRD, IFC, etc.)
- Managing air quality modelling using ADMS Road, ADMS 6, or AERMOD, with expertise in dispersion modelling and data interpretation
- Supporting ambient and indoor air quality monitoring (both passive and automatic techniques)
- Covering Odour, Ecological, and Dust Risk Assessments where relevant

Business Development & Strategic Growth
- Developing and reviewing proposals for emerging international markets
- Advancing marketing strategies and client engagement in high-potential regions
- Contributing to regional planning frameworks and urban development policies
- Managing project budgets, timelines, and team deliverables

- Mentorship & Operational Excellence
- Coaching junior staff in technical skills and project management
- Identifying efficiencies in workflows to enhance service offerings

What We’re Looking For in You
✅ Industrial Expertise & Technical Skills
- Demonstrated experience in air quality consultancy, particularly with masterplanning, SEAs, EIAs and GIGA projects
- Strong capability in atmospheric dispersion modelling (ADMS Road, ADMS 6, AERMOD)
- Proven expertise in supporting outstanding stakeholder engagement for clients in emerging markets
- Knowledge of LEED, WELL, Envision, and other building certifications (illuminating our preference for indoor air quality skills)
- Familiarity with GIS (Q-GIS/ArcGIS) and financial/project management software
✅ Soft Skills & Business Development
- Ability to develop meaningful relationships and guide negative outcomes toward solutions for complex projects
- Proficiency in proposal writing, presentation skills, and stakeholder management
- Experience working with lender standards (EBRD, IFC) and local regulatory frameworks
- Initiatives that identify weaknesses in processes and drive improvement
✅ Professional Background & Qualifications
- A degree in mathematics, physics, environmental science, geography, or a related discipline, ideally with a master’s degree. IAQM Membership is preferred but not mandatory – qualifications/experience to reach membership are also welcome.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a client-facing position, including project management, client liaison and technical evaluations.
- Total experience featuring consultancy in environmental sustainability services.
