About the Role: Smart Building Specialist – Associate Engineer
You’ll become a pivotal member of WSP’s expanding Buildings Technology Systems team, delivering smart building and systems integration projects from design to client handover. As our Associate-level technical specialist, you’ll take a leadership role in designing, managing, and integrating ICT, AV, and Smart Technology solutions for properties of all scales.
Your Responsibilities:
- End-to-End Project Accountability: From conception to client handover, oversee design, project management, and delivery of smart building integration projects.
- Technical Leadership: Drive concept through detailed design, managing technology and systems integration design across multi-disciplinary projects while coordinating with architects, engineers, and consultant teams.
- Stakeholder Communication: Work closely with clients, stakeholders, and internal specialists (e.g., security, lighting, ICT) to interpret requirements, develop solutions, and ensure cohesive delivery.
- Future-Ready Solutions: Propel innovation in sustainable, user-centric smart buildings, leveraging IoT, cloud platforms, and enterprise systems.
- Cross-Disciplinary Consulting: Collaborate with experts in security, lighting, BMS, AV, and digital twin technologies to create holistic, future-proof smart building designs.

Forming part of this dynamic team, you’ll tackle world-class projects like:
- High-rise towers (e.g., 22 Bishopsgate, 40 Leadenhall)
- Hyperscale data centres and smart stadia (e.g., Fulham Football Club)
- Digital transformative healthcare (e.g., Monklands Hospital’s digital twin)

What We’re Looking For
Here’s how we’ll measure impactful contributions:
- Emerging Tech Champion: Passion for smart building technologies with proof from research, practical application, or client-facing projects.
- Smart Design Delivery: Experience in design and delivery of medium-to-large building projects with systems integration expertise.
- Digital & Data Expertise:
- Integration architecture that harmonises building systems and enterprise IT—focused on interoperability, cybersecurity, and operational resilience.
- Systems integration strategies that bridge legacy BMS with IoT, cloud, and AI-driven smart systems.
- Digital smart-building skills—solutions development, technical specifications, architecture reviews, and deployment roadmaps.
- Client Collaboration: Proven ability to engage stakeholders and vendors to develop clear smart building solutions that meet governance mandates.
- Specification & Documentation: Expertise in design, specification, and implementation—including requisitions, roadmaps, and compliance deliverables.
- Cyber & Security: Deep understanding of cybersecurity risks in smart building deployments.
- AI & Built Environment: Insight into current AI-driven applications—potential use cases, scalability, and impacts.
- Strategic Partnerships:
- Bid Support: Aid in proposal development and securing new/renovation-focused follow-on projects.
- Technical Leadership: Provide visible leadership to engineering teams, mentoring junior colleagues.
- Technical Agility:
- Review/assess designs to align with industry expectations, evaluate risks, and articulate consolidated feedback.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Translate complex technical concepts graphically and clearly to teams, stakeholders, and clients.
- Domain-Specific Knowledge:
- Core Building Systems (BMS, fire safety, lighting, MEP, security) and ICT integration to support modern, intuitive smart workplace environments.
- Understanding of green building certifications (SmartScore, BREEAM, LEED, NABERS) and user-focused well-being metrics.
- Professional Accreditation:
- CIBSE, IET, or Engineering Council Chartership attainment (or relevant track record demonstrating potential).
- Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (preferred SC-level).
