Associate Data Scientist Department: Data & AI Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time Location: UK – London Reports To: Takashi Nakamura

A Fresh Perspective on an Unusual Challenge

Insurance isn’t the first industry most people think of when they imagine interesting data science work. That’s exactly why this role is thrilling.

CFC’s Data & AI unit is building production agentic systems that automate complex underwriting decisions—not demos, not shelfware, but AI agents and machine learning pipelines that drive real business impact. The team includes ML engineers and software engineers shipping production-grade services, and as an Associate Data Scientist, you’ll work alongside them as the analytical counterpart: running experiments, testing hypotheses, and generating evidence that shapes what gets built and how it evolves.

This is an entry-level data science role tailored for someone eager to explore production AI systems from day one. Expect hands-on collaboration with engineers, contributing to real-world discovery work: statistical analysis, feature engineering, LLM evaluation, and the critical evidence-based thinking that separates AI that retreats into notebooks from AI that thrives in the wild.

The challenges are ripped from the headlines. Messy, complex, high-stakes data with layers of underwriting nuance—problems that stay engaging. If you’re itching to grow fast in applied AI and ML—working on real-world systems, not toy datasets—this is your playground.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As an investigator of emerging technologies (think: LLMs), you’ll scrutinise their performance and practical value, balancing innovation with responsibility.

You’ll thrive if you:

  • Blend strong statistical grounding with practical technical skills (Python and SQL)
  • Take pride in rigorous, reliable analysis—presenting findings that matter—not just models
  • Are thoughtful and detail-obsessed, trusted to interpret nuance across diverse stakeholders
  • Kiss curiosity goodnight: you ask sharp questions, question assumptions, and thrive at the intersection of learning and owning
  • Bonus (but not mandated): Tinker with Azure, MLflow, or LLM tooling—insight, rigor, and mindset matter most
