About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Associate Design Manager to base in our Newcastle office, leading major projects with strategic vision and operational agility. In this senior role, you’ll oversee complex Mechanical/Electrical installations, systems, and facilities (across diverse building types), ensuring technical efficiency, financial stability, and adherence to industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Leadership: Manage end-to-end delivery of large-scale design and engineering projects.
- Technical & Financial Accountability:
- Conduct profitability diagnoses, feasibility studies, and bid preparation.
- Align project schedules with cost control, feasibility, and external dependencies.
- Collaborative Management:
- Lead ME/electric consultants, clients, contractors & multidisciplinary teams.
- Represent RED in technical stakeholder meetings.
- Specifying & Analysing: Develop controls systems, instrumentation & operational protocols for M&E services.
- Quality Assurance: Recommend and enforce BS/UK regulatory compliance in drawings, calculations, and specifications.
- Risk & Performance: Champion risk monitoring, performance reviews, and internal controls.
- Client Advocacy: Provide technical consultation, link critical decision-making, and manage expectations aloud-ilia—tion.
- Innovative Problem-Solving: Propose holistic engineering solutions; leverage RED’s global delivery framework.

Qualifications & Experience
Technical & Professional
- Bachelor’s degree (BSc/BEng) in an engineering discipline or equivalent industry experience.
- Chartered status (e.g., CEng, MIEE, or CIBSE equivalent).
- HND/HNC in engineering + substantial practical experience if non-chartered.
- Specific expertise: M&E system design for mixed-use buildings (commercial, residential, industrial).
- Proven track record in consultancy/project management, ideally within a global engineering firm.
Core Skills
- Technical Depth:
- Deep familiarity with UK codes (BS, EN standards), health/safety law, and contractual frameworks.
- Ability to assess existing M&E systems and analyse their sustainability/performance.
- Leadership & Development:
- Mentor teams, train juniors, and drive project cultures.
- Facilitate meetings, moderate risk reviews, and challenge muted solutions.
- Data-Driven Excellence:
- Proficiency in MSC office, spreadsheets, and IT-based design tools (automation, 3D modelling).
- Credit control/invoicing experience to manage project finances.
