Job Description
Start here. Grow here.
Are you ready to lead a multi-disciplinary team including scientists, engineers and other sustainability professionals to shape the future of resilience and adaptation by providing advisory services in our Environment + Energy group?
Join our dynamic and multidisciplinary Carbon and ESG team, as an Associate Director in any of our rapidly growing offices including Bristol, Edinburgh, or London offices (although other offices may be considered), as well as taking advantage of our flexible hybrid working model. At AECOM, we’re at the forefront of innovation, delivering an exceptional portfolio of resilience/adaptation programmes and projects through long-term partnerships with key clients.
Our Carbon & Advisory practice has a well-deserved reputation with FTSE100 and Fortune500 clients, governments, financial institutions, infrastructure owners and operators for Net Zero Resilience and ESG technical advisory services. The practice works across a wide range of sectors including highways, rail, aviation, power, carbon capture and storage, government, local government, water utilities and urban regeneration, industrials, manufacturing, chems/pharmas, and financial services.
Here’s what you’ll do:
We are seeing an increase in demand for climate risk assessment and associated adaptation and resilience strategies. The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Strengthen our position as a leader in climate change risk assessment and adaptation strategies for infrastructure and business clients in the UK and across the European region.
- Work with the practice leadership to develop our climate change resilience service offerings with practical and viable solutions for collaborative projects and external clients.
- Contribute to the delivery of our ambitious business plan; growing our share of the market in infrastructure including energy, transport and water, and in government services and wider business resilience and climate change adaptation by winning work with new/existing clients in the UK and across the EMEA region.
- Lead, manage and deliver commercially successful projects that maintain the high-quality professional outputs that we are known for.
- Develop talent within the team through line management and mentoring and support the upskilling of our colleagues on climate change resilience and adaptation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
