About the Role
Debt Finance Origination (DFO) is responsible for the origination of Loan & Investment Banking business across the Commercial Bank’s client base in the UK. The product-agnostic team originates opportunities across all sectors via consistent and intense client coverage. Using our market-leading loan proposition and deep knowledge and understanding of the Investment Banking product suite, we proactively provide clients with strategic content to support their growth ambitions and help optimise their capital structure.
DFO collaborates closely and regularly with Coverage and Senior Management across CMB, as well as product and sector partners within Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB).
The Associate Director position is part of the primary support for the Directors as the market face of the team. This role will support loan growth across the client and prospect universe, as well as identifying capital market and alternative funding (e.g private credit) opportunities where appropriate. You will directly support deep-seated client relationships to bring our loan proposition to our corporate client base and targeted products.
Responsibilities
- Working on large scale and complex lending opportunities, both bilateral and syndicated, for our high value Commercial Bank client set
- Originating, structuring, pricing and executing Loan transactions (primarily RCF/ Term Loans) across the corporate client base from ordinary course refinances to large-scale M&A
- Originating the full suite of Investment Banking transactions (including M&A Advisory, Acquisition Financing, Equity Linked Capital Markets & Debt Capital Markets,) across the UK corporate client base
- Driving proactive collaboration with Investment Banking product partners, international colleagues, and other global businesses to deliver maximum value of HSBC products and services to our clients and deepening existing relationships
- Conducting industry and company specific research, preparing financial models and analysing financial reports
- Sharing information, knowledge and ideas to enhance client dialogue and team performance
- Preparing financial models and analysing financial reports
- Developing corporate finance and advisory based content to support client experience and investment banking origination efforts
- Maintaining and developing trusted relationships with the Coverage teams and Senior Management to drive origination opportunities and client engagement
- Coaching and training junior members of the team on loan and capital market origination skills
- Idea generation to ensure value-add content is taken to our clients
- Ensuring DFO operates in accordance with HSBC’s internal guidelines, controls and procedures and also in line with any external regulatory requirements.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this role will have:
- A genuine interest in the financial markets and Investment Banking origination
- Deep knowledge of the corporate loan market and Investment Banking products
- Advanced knowledge of Loan products, including cash-flow lending (corporate or leveraged), M&A and post-IPO financing
- Advanced understanding of all Investment Banking solutions and how these can be applied to our client base
- Complex financial analysis, credit analysis, and financial modelling skills
- Ability to research and propose themes for business developments and how these can be applied for our clients
- Proficiency with PowerPoint and Excel
- Ability to learn new and sophisticated concepts quickly and under time pressure is essential, managing your time effectively through multiple competing demands
- A comprehensive understanding of risk management and proven experience of ensuring own/others' compliance with relevant regulatory processes
- Willingness to undertake the training/study required in this role, i.e if not currently a Certified Person, the selected candidate must achieve Certified Person Competency within two years of joining the team
- Willingness to undertake internal and/or external training/study for personal and professional development and to bolster the skill set that will be developed while in this role, including financial modelling and corporate valuations

Position Details
This is a hybrid position with the base location for this role being 8 Canada Square, London. There may be a requirement to travel both in and around London and nationally on occasion for client visits.
Regulatory References
Under the requirements of the FCA Certification Regime, HSBC is required to take reasonable steps to obtain a regulatory reference from the candidate’s previous employers covering the past six years.
Qualifications
This role is subject to the requirements of Certification Regime, set out by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Candidates must either have attained the CISI Level 3 Certificate in Corporate Finance or should be committed to completing this qualification within 1 year of being in role.
