Job Description

About the Role

Join AECOM’sNature Team as an Associate Ecologist in our UK & Ireland offices (Manchester, Leeds, Basingstoke, Newcastle, Glasgow, Cambridge, Nottingham, Liverpool, or other locations). Your role will focus on ecological deliverables across large energy, water, renewables, defence, and transport infrastructure projects, alongside smaller community-focused work. You’ll partner with both our UK & Ireland team and global AECOM experts on multinational initiatives.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Supporting species and habitat surveys with innovative techniques
  • Data capture, reporting, project management, and consultations
  • Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), including technical training and mentoring

Responsibilities

As an Associate Ecologist, you’ll:

  • Lead ecological contributions for internal/external clients, delivering planning inputs across:
    • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
    • Protected Species Baseline Reports
    • Ecological Impact Assessments
    • Habitats Regulations Assessments
    • Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) calculations
  • Provide technical leadership for proportionate, pragmatic solutions
  • Drive consultation with clients, planning authorities, and stakeholders globally
  • Foster research and innovation within the team
  • Lead bid and tender submissions for ecological services
  • Mentor colleagues & junior staff to drive skill-sharing

Requirements

Must Have:

  • Proven experience in planning and delivering UK/Ireland ecological services (projects-based)
  • Strong understanding of wildlife conservation frameworks
  • Membership in a recognised professional body (e.g. CIEEM) with progress towards Chartership
  • Strong field skills, ideally with a protected species licence
  • Proactive health & safety awareness
  • Commitment to mentoring and team development
