The Pitch
It’s a fun job with a genuinely exceptional team. You'll engage with deep-tech pioneers in leading laboratories and startups around the world, while advising R&D organisations and government agencies on the technologies shaping the future.
About the Role
Outsmart Insight is seeking an Associate Director with a strong scientific or engineering background and proven experience analysing emerging technologies across multiple domains. You'll be equally comfortable discussing quantum computing, synthetic biology, advanced robotics, aerospace or AI, rapidly synthesising complex technical developments into strategic insight for clients.
You'll engage with scientists, founders and industry experts around the world to understand frontier technologies and translate complex research into clear, strategic insight for multinational R&D companies and government agencies.
This is a role for an intellectually curious generalist. You don't need to be an expert in every technology – we're looking for someone who can become conversant quickly, ask the right questions and produce exceptional work.
Alongside leading client engagements, you'll lead a small team, mentor analysts, build trusted client relationships and help shape the future direction of Outsmart Insight's technology intelligence capabilities.
Key Responsibilities

- Review and sign off client deliverables, maintaining exceptional quality standards
- Transform complex technical research into concise, client-ready reports and presentations
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams, mentoring analysts throughout delivery
- Present findings, facilitate workshops and communicate strategic recommendations to senior stakeholders
- Produce thought leadership that strengthens Outsmart Insight's position in technology intelligence

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
