About the Role
As an Associate Director in our Geotechnical Engineering team, you will:
- Lead technical delivery for deep basements, foundations, retaining structures, and ground-movement assessments in dense urban environments
- Direct multidisciplinary project teams, ensuring robust, commercially successful, and innovative solutions
- Engage closely with Directors, clients, contractors, and design teams to drive project success
- Develop the UK practice through client relationships, new business opportunities, and people leadership
- Mentor engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement

Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Lead geotechnical design for deep basements, foundations, retaining structures, and ground-movement assessments
- Oversee and interpret ground investigations, preparing/reviewing technical reports
- Perform advanced numerical modelling (PLAXIS 2D/3D, GeoStudio, WALLAP, Repute, Oasys package)
- Develop design concepts, project methodologies, and risk management strategies
- Ensure CDM compliance and quality assurance procedures throughout project lifecycle
Project & Commercial Management
- Plan resources, manage programmes, and control project costs
- Prepare fee proposals and negotiate variations
- Lead design reviews, scope sub-consultants, and manage commercials
Client & Business Development
- Promote Robert Bird Group to existing and prospective clients
- Strengthen relationships via exemplary project delivery
- Lead client liaison, ensuring alignment with project needs
- Represent the company at meetings with stakeholders
Requirements
- Degree in Civil Engineering (MSc in Geotechnical Engineering preferred)
- Chartered status with ICE or The Geological Society
- Extensive experience with PLAXIS 2D/3D and numerical tools (GeoStudio, Repute, WALLAP, Oasys)
- Proven track record in geotechnical design for buildings and infrastructure
- Strong report writing, technical communication, and quality-checking skills
- Understanding of CDM Regulations in design/investigation roles
- Experience in a fast-paced consultancy environment
- Commercial acumen, project management expertise, and ability to lead profitably
- Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and engage with clients directly
