Associate Director - Highway Engineering Design
Associate Director – Engineering Design (Traffic, Active Travel, Highway & Public Realm)
We are seeking an experienced and driven professional to manage and oversee the delivery of diverse traffic, active travel, public realm, and highway engineering projects for ITP’s Advisory Group in the UK. You’ll provide technical leadership and project management support across multidisciplinary projects for new and existing clients, developing and maintaining strong client relationships within the sector.

By joining Haskoning as part of the Integrated Transport Planning (ITP) team, you’ll work alongside professionals dedicated to vision-led transport planning, designing sustainable mobility solutions that meet people’s needs whileresponding to local contexts.
What You Will Do as an Associate Director
Our Engineering Design team designs transport systems and infrastructure that ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable movement of people and goods. Your role will include:
- Leading the delivery of traffic, active travel, public realm and highway/infrastructure engineering projects from concept through to detailed design.
- Acting as Project Director and Project Manager, monitoring financial performance and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Reviewing and approving technical designs, drawings, and reports to ensure compliance with project briefs and UK/regional standards.
- Offering technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineers and designers, fostering learning and professional development.
- Driving innovation and continuous improvement in design processes, ensuring alignment with best practices and emerging technologies.
- Developing and maintaining sound client relationships, identifying and realising new commercial opportunities.
- Preparing detailed proposals, client briefs, and fee proposals, and contributing to or leading bids.
- Collaborating with other ITP teams and supporting strong internal relationships across Haskoning’s business lines.
- Participating in professional associations, working groups, or industry forums, acting as a voice in thought leadership and industry advancement.

What We Expect From You
We’re looking for a candidate with a proven track record in highway and infrastructure design project leadership. Required experience and skills include:
- Experience leading Section 278/38 Highway approval submissions.
- Active Travel design expertise, including familiarity with LTN 1/20 and experience working with Active Travel England.
- Public realm design skills, including streetscape enhancements and integration of urban design principles.
- Deep knowledge of highway design standards and software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D), along with experience with BIM processes and 3D modelling software.
- Proven ability to lead teams and deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng or equivalent) (highly desirable).
A growing network of industry contacts and positive client referrals is also highly valued.
