Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Risk, the Director of New Business Intake will have primary responsibility for Conflicts and AML within the U.K., Ireland, and Dubai and will liaise with the U.S. business in relation to resolving Conflicts involving the listed jurisdictions. Experience of ABA Conflicts rules and resolution will be a strong advantage for any candidate applying.

The Director of New Business Intake will be responsible for:

  • A team of circa 25 analysts across AML and Conflicts.
  • Support from a Business Acceptance Manager based in Liverpool, who oversees day-to-day team management.

Position Responsibilities

  • Overall day-to-day responsibility for Business Acceptance within the firm, acting as a point of escalation for the Business Acceptance team and Senior Analysts, with occasional visits to Liverpool likely.
  • Acting as the deputy MLRO (Money Laundering Reporting Officer) and supporting the MLRO with:
    • Internal and external Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs).
    • Disciplinary enforcement of AML policy (with backing from a Senior Financial Crime Analyst).
  • Serving as the liaison point for the U.S. Conflicts team, supervising London-based analysts assisting with U.S. Conflicts matters.
  • Keeping up-to-date with changes in relevant legislation, policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Acting as the Anti-Bribery & Corruption Officer, monitoring the Gifts and Hospitality register, and providing guidance to partners and fee earners on potential bribery and corruption risks.
  • Acting as the Sanctions Officer, advising partners and fee earners on sanctions-related issues.
  • Supporting the MLRO and Director of Risk during regulatory audits and visits, ensuring audit points/findings are addressed.
  • Supervising the Business Acceptance Manager in preparing documentation for:
    • The annual AML Risk Assessment.
    • Annual Independent AML audits.
  • Developing strong relationships with other business services functions to facilitate collaboration, attending Heads of Business Services meetings, and contributing to broader operational issues.
  • Organising and delivering risk-related training as needed.

Experience, Skills, And Qualifications

  • Able to demonstrate understanding of the unique risks faced by an international commercial law firm.
  • Skilled in managing legal and commercial conflicts of interest, taking regulatory requirements into account while balancing partners' needs across offices.
  • Experience in ABA conflicts of interest roles is advantageous (to be learned for candidates without prior relevant exposure).
  • Strong communicator, capable of interacting effectively with teams and individuals across U.K. and international practices.
  • Commercially astute—able to provide feasible solutions under pressure to fee earners.
  • Project management skills—efficiently delivering a range of tasks to completion.
  • Experience in knowledge-sharing and mentoring within legal and risk teams.
  • Calm, professional, and consistent under pressure, capable of managing competing demands.
  • Sets high standards, demonstrating leadership to drive best practices.
  • Approaches challenges methodically, analysing complex issues and communicating solutions clearly.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Promotes collaboration in the risk team, fostering a supportive, co-operative culture.
