Associate Director, Site Development - Arup Northern Region
About the Opportunity
Arup’s Site Development (Civil Engineering) Teams drive the design of civil and infrastructure solutions at the intersection of planning, engineering, and delivery. They work collaboratively across master planning, mixed-use developments, and specialist projects—from feasibility to construction—supporting clients across the UK.
This exciting opportunity introduces an Associate Director to lead our Site Development Team across four key locations: Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Belfast. Your primary base will be Newcastle, where our largest standalone team of 11 collaborates intensely, with Edinburgh initially named as your secondary focus. Given the growth potential—expanding towards 150+ team members regionally—the role also demands strategic growth thinking, establishing strong North- and UK-wide foundations while fostering further team development in Glasgow and Belfast.
Your role balances people leadership with strategic direction, driving high-profile complex projects, coordinating skills across a diversified network, and shaping Arup’s future growth in data centres and mixed-use development.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead consultations with Newcastle (primary) and Edinburgh (secondary) teams, setting a vision for cultural evolution and individual growth within this dynamic setting.
- Develop emerging leaders, especially Associates responsible for Data Centre development, ensuring future leadership across Newcastle’s 11-member team.
- Forge solid internal coordination and share insights from the 150+ team members in Site Development, Northern Geography.
Client & Project Engagement
- Be the client-facing candidate for Site Development in major mixed-use developments, masterplanning, and Infrastructure schemes.
- Ensure urban, transport, energy, and sustainability priorities align seamlessly across multidisciplinary teams.
- Champion client expertise and innovation for data centres and multi-use schemes, enhancing regional service offer.
Strategic Influence & Success Manifestation
- Lead and support growth in Data Centre infrastructure regionally—together with financial acumen.
- Build opportunities in existing markets while staying ahead of investment trends, helping Arup shape future strategies and work-winning approaches.
- Lead sustainability, resilience, and Social Value integration for all development projects toward net-zero targets.

- Empower the team with actionable assets to drive efficiency and innovation—specialising in integrating diverse technical solutions.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Technical Expertise & Experience
- A degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline (durwell assured with sector-recognised chartered status, such as CEng/MICE).
- 10+ years senior experience in site development, infrastructure, or related civil engineering disciplines working within multidisciplinary environments.
- Current chartered status, numerical assurances, or proven capability to achieve this rapidly. Possess the ability to lead complex projects:

- Lead at scale – proven team and leadership experience, including context-setting for individuals seeking partnership progress and sector-changing success.

Commercial Insight & Market Influence
- Masterplanner delivered knowledge trusted for professional story advancement by identifying current/emerging market trends and steering clients appropriately.
- Strong relationships client-developer-department interfaces needing united positions to commercialise proposals, driving effective decision-making.
Experience in Data Centres Preferred
- Special favour shown to those with hands-on experience or interest in Data Centre infrastructure development and associated complexity addressing.
Soft & Interactive Skills
- Engaging communicator, ensuring divisional integration and cohesion, championing clarity in genres/technical matters.
- Strong networker/peer-influencer – Demonstrated relationship progress and business development merits among client/associate partners.
