Senior Substation Electrical Engineer (Transmission & Distribution)

Are you an ambitious engineer with a passion for large-scale infrastructure in the UK Transmission & Distribution sector? Join our team specialising in HV (High Voltage) design for projects ranging from 132kV to 400kV. This role involves:
- Primary plant design for substations
- Feasibility, optioneering, FEED, and detailed design
- Design assurance for both existing and new infrastructure
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead technical discussions with clients and internal teams to:
- Establish project scopes
- Define interfaces
- Ensure on-time delivery
- Technical delivery leadership:
- Agree project approaches with engineering teams
- Monitor progress and quality
- Liaise with project management to build resourcing forecasts and programmes
- Utilise substation project lifecycle knowledge for successful client delivery
- Build client relationships by:
- Understanding requirements and perspectives
- Adopting a client-focused delivery mindset
- Proposal development:
- Commercial awareness
- Cost monitoring and bid management
- Opportunity identification
- Champion safety-in-design principles
- Mentor junior staff to enhance team capability

Qualifications & Experience
We’re looking for candidates with proven expertise in:
- Energy sector consultancy/utility/contractor experience (e.g., with National Grid ESO, SP Energy Networks, SSE, or similar UK/Ireland utilities)
- HV infrastructure design experience, including:
- Concept and FEED design
- Detailed design (primary focus) and secondary systems understanding
- Deep knowledge of *electrical AC HV plant infrastructure, including:
- AIS (Aircore Insulator switchgear)
- GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear)
- Familiarity with National Grid standards and specifications
- Proposal/bid management experience (multi-discipline leadership)
- Experience with:
- Control systems
- Transformers
- HVDC systems, interconnectors
- HV Protection & Control (advantageous)
- CDAE/LCDAE Approval (ideally)
