About the Role
Title: Substation Technical Lead (HV Transmission & Distribution)
AECOM’s UK Transmission & Distribution business invites you to join a team of innovative engineers to grow your career while delivering impactful infrastructure projects. This role focuses on high-voltage (HV) substation design (132–400kV), working across feasibility, front-end engineering design (FEED), and detailed design for substations, grid connections, and private networks.
Responsibilities

Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead technical discussions with clients and internal teams to define project scopes, design interfaces, and delivery strategies.
- Build trusted client relationships by understanding needs, applying commercial awareness, and fostering a collaborative, client-centric approach.

Technical Leadership & Design Delivery
- Oversee the full design lifecycle for HV substations, ensuring quality, compliance with standards (e.g., National Grid), and adherence to project timelines.
- Guide engineering teams in scope resonance, methodology development, and deliverable quality assurance before client sign-off.
- Apply expertise in high-voltage infrastructure—including AIS, GIS systems, transformers, HVDC, interconnector, and protection/control equipment.

Commercial & Cost Management
- Develop bids/proposals, track budgets, and identify opportunities to optimise projects.
- Work with project management to forecast resourcing needs and align design efforts with programmes.

Safety & People Development
- Advocate for safety in design, embedding principles to protect personnel and assets.
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering team skills and leadership over the long term.
Requirements
Essential Criteria
- Sector Experience: At least 5 years in consultancy, contracting, or utility within transmission/distribution energy (preferably UK or Irish markets).
- Technical Knowledge:
- Extensive HV substation design experience across concept, FEED, and detailed design stages.
- Strong understanding of electrical HV infrastructure, equipment standards, and standards (e.g., National Grid specifications, AIS/GIS technologies).
- Experience with control systems, transformers, HV protection, and interconnectors (highly advantageous).
- Development & Proposal führen:
- Track record in bidding/multi-discipline proposals, from drafting to completion.
- Dtrace Flyverns & Sorderungen: Experience in site review and construction oversight (primary sidempfänger required; familiarity with secondary systems valued).
