You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.
A Little More About Your Role…
Due to our expanding public and private sector workload, our Future of Mobility team are looking for an Associate Director or Technical Director with experience and knowledge of emerging modes, services, systems and business models within the transport sector to join the team. Experience could include one or more of: connected and automated mobility; new modes and services, including micromobility; and ticketing, payment and information systems.
This is a consultancy and advisory role. You will work with public and private sector clients to help them make better decisions about the future of mobility – shaping strategy and policy, feasibility, trials and pilots, investment cases, delivery programmes, and monitoring and evaluation.
Working as part of a consultancy team, you will be on several projects and client accounts at any given time. Although the role has a focus on the areas outlined above, your work may cover a variety of areas of expertise.
There is flexibility around where this role can be based, with potential base locations being Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London or Manchester.
The role is a varied one but will include following responsibilities:
- Leading on a range of consultancy projects (as Project Director), which at any one time could include a selection of the following:
- Undertaking market and policy research to assess how new modes and services could be applied in real world context.
- Supporting clients with funding applications, horizon-scanning, policy development and strategic decision making
- Designing and delivering research to understand user needs, public attitudes and behavioural responses
- Leading feasibility studies to assess the viability of emerging transport interventions
- Developing business cases, investment narratives and funding applications for new modes and services
- Ensuring projects are delivered on time and to budget.
- Applying strong analytical skills to critically evaluate and analyse data to provide robust recommendations.
- Taking the lead on business development activities, including proactive client engagement and supporting with, or leading on, the preparation of strategic bids and smaller fee proposals.
- Helping to drive innovation and identify market trends to add value to projects and bids, and position WSP to maximise our future opportunities
- Building and maintaining effective client relationships, delivering a high standard of client care.
- External thought leadership activities such as conferences and published papers and cultivating partnerships with both industry and academia.
- Making an active contribution to WSP’s four pillars (People; Clients & Growth; Operations; and Technical Excellence) and supporting our Leads in these roles

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
