Associate Director - Transport Planning

We are excited to invite a seasoned Associate Director – Transport Planning to join our Transport and Mobility Planning team based in Exeter, as a key enabler for our expanding regional capabilities.

Within our growing team of over 100 transport and mobility specialists across the UK, you’ll drive the delivery of complex development projects, oversee client relationships, and expand SLR’s transport planning profile in the region. This is your perfect opportunity to progress at an Associate, or Principal Transport Planner level, poised to step up to a senior leadership role.


The Role

The ideal candidate will lead and oversee transport planning projects throughout the development lifecycle—from early promotions and planning applications to condition discharge and post-completion monitoring. Core responsibilities will include:

  • Project and technical delivery of high-complexity developments
  • Proactive client relationships and business development initiatives
  • Preparation and review of key Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, and all related planning documentation
  • Effective team management, alignment of programmes, and budget oversight
  • Strategic stakeholder engagement, consultation facilitation, and presentation of technical strategies
  • Providing leadership and development support to junior colleagues
  • Collaborating on bid management and commercial growth strategies

About You

We’re seeking an experienced professional with the following qualifications:

  • Director or Principal Transport Planner-level expertise
  • PhD or degree (minimum BSc/MSc) in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Deep understanding of UK transport planning policy and development regulatory frameworks
  • Team-oriented skills in drafting Transport statements and assessments, consultancy-level Travel Plans
  • Proven track record of client management, consultation, and commercial bid strategies
  • Strong leadership proven through successful mentoring and team performance
  • A forward-thinking attitude towards market growth and revenue development
