Stage 1 and 2 Mathematics Modules
Unit: Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Salary: £38,784 (Pro Rata, based on FTE) Location: Various locations across the UK and Republic of Ireland Closing Date: 21 July 2026 - 17:00 FTE: 0.08 – 0.22 Contract: Fixed term until September 2028 (probation period applies)
About the University & Role
The Open University, the UK’s largest university and a leader in flexible part-time education, is seeking Associate Lecturers (ALs) to support teaching on the following Stage 1 and Stage 2 Mathematics modules:
- MST124 Essential Mathematics 1 (30 credits, Stage 1)
- MST125 Essential Mathematics 2 (30 credits, Stage 1)
- MST224 Mathematical Methods (30 credits, Stage 2)
This is a part-time, home-based position with flexible hours. The workload primarily operates between October and June, though some administrative support between July and September may be required.
Key Responsibilities
Your role will involve supporting a tutor group of approximately 20 students with the following tasks:

Correspondence tuition, including:
- Marking assignments and providing detailed, constructive feedback
- Delivery of online tutorials
- Prompt responses to student queries
- Individual student support as required
- Proactive engagement with students to enhance learning

Administrative collaboration:
- Liaising with academic and professional services staff for quality improvement and records management

Requirements
Essential Criteria
To be considered, you must meet all of the following:
- A degree with significant mathematical content
- A strong grasp of the mathematics covered in the assigned modules
- Ability to:
- Grade assignments accurately
- Provide constructive feedback to students
- Support non-specialist/mathematically less-confident learners
- Teach effectively in an online environment, or gain understanding of online pedagogical challenges
Desirable
It would be advantageous to demonstrate:
- Familiarity with computer algebra systems (e.g., Maxima)
- Experience in online teaching and assessment
- Evidence of reflecting on and improving teaching practices
- Relevant teaching qualifications or Higher Education Academy accreditation
Other Requirements
- Completing a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check (or equivalent) for your country of residency
- Confirmation of your Right to Work in the UK or Republic of Ireland (no visa sponsorship available)

Conditions & Expectations
