PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a financial regulation associate to join the team. We are interested in candidates from newly qualified upwards – at associate, managing associate and legal director level. You will work closely with our regulated lending and banking (RLB) Partners (Rosanna Bryant, Clare Hughes and Sophie Skelton) and Payments Partners (Rebecca Hickment) to help grow the work and profile of this part of our practice.

There is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in delivering non-contentious regulatory advice, client relationship development and the continued expansion of the team and practice, which will provide clear career progression opportunities.

THE TEAM

Addleshaw Goddard's Financial Regulation Team is one of largest in the UK with a mix of lawyers and compliance professionals split over Leeds, London, and Scotland. The team is headed up by Rosanna Bryant and 8 other Partners with around 19 other fee earners.

This role sits within our regulated lending and banking (RLB) and payments offering of the team. The RLB Team is tier 1 ranked in Chambers and Partners. Chambers 2025 provides that, "Addleshaw Goddard has real strength and depth in the consumer finance space".

Our clients include leading clearing banks, challenger banks, building societies, e-money issuers, non-bank payment service providers, credit card providers, asset finance companies, debt collectors, debt purchasers, debt management companies, brokers, home credit lenders and point of sale finance providers. We also advise smaller niche lenders of financial services providers, such as specialist private banks.

We also have a growing client base of FinTechs, large technology companies and retailers who are all rapidly transforming the financial service industry through digitization, automation and decentralised technologies.

What To Expect In This Role

You will work closely with the RLB and Payments Partners and work with other legal Directors, Managing Associates and Associates delivering high quality work to clients as well as helping to win new work. You can expect to have the opportunity to play a significant role in working for clients that are key to the firm. As part of this you may have the opportunity to undertake client secondments to assist our clients and to build your skills and expertise further.

We have a strong reputation for providing our associates at every level with good levels of responsibility within a supportive and stretching environment. The role is ideal for a committed lawyer who is looking to advance their career and create a name for themselves. Whatever your level, you'll be expected to play a full role in the Team, including involvement in business development and regular client contact. The team will take a genuine interest and support you with your development therefore offering excellent career prospects. You'll be involved in the following type of work.

  • Advising on all regulatory aspects of retail financial services including deposit taking, payment services, consumer credit and mortgages.
  • Drafting customer facing documentation for RLB products, including regulated consumer credit agreements, regulated mortgage documents and current account and savings terms and conditions.
  • Helping clients assess the impact of new or proposed legislation and informing their implementation or lobbying strategies.
  • Working closely with clients as they explore and implement new technologies into their propositions such as AI, open banking and smart data, DeFi and distributed ledger technology.
  • Supporting the Partners in managing client relationships and supporting with business development activities.
  • Providing sign-off on marketing materials, including TV advertising, digital promotions and billboard promotions.
  • Conducting compliance audits of businesses or product documentation.
  • Work closely with commercial and transactional teams on some of the biggest and most innovative and pioneering deals in the industry.
  • Assisting with FCA authorisation applications.

YOUR AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE

We are looking for lawyers at every level. You should however have some experience of advising on different payment arrangements and their regulatory treatment, the Consumer Credit Act and subordinate legislation and the Consumer Credit Sourcebook, the Mortgages and Home Finance Conduct of Business Sourcebook and the regulatory treatment of new forms of digital money.

Most importantly, you should have a real and genuine interest in this area and be keen to grow that knowledge in a proactive way.

You should be adept at building strong client relationships and also like working in a team.

Our ideal candidate should have a keen intellect and a commercial mindset. You will be able to demonstrate that you are able to provide pragmatic and tailored advice in a way that supports internal and external clients alike.

  • Capability to lead on and have ownership of your matters to bring them to conclusion.
  • The ability to actively support complex transactions, liaising and coordinating with fee earners from other relevant disciplines as needed.
