Job Title: Project Director
Location: Hybrid (London or other specified locations - London, Manchester, Birmingham, or Bristol offices)
Department: DCS - Integrated Programme Controls team
About the Role
Project Director is a key senior position within the AECOM Integrated Programme Controls team. As part of AECOM’s growing risk management team, your primary responsibility will be to lead risk management capability for AECOM’s major infrastructure projects across multiple sectors like transport, buildings, and other critical investment areas.
This role spans strategic risk leadership and operational team management, blending technical expertise with business development to secure and deliver high-value projects. A core goal is to ensure risk is integrated effectively throughout the project lifecycle, while continuously improving AECOM’s ability to understand and mitigate challenges that arise.
Responsibilities & Key Duties
As Project Director, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Risk Management Leadership
- Act as the risk management lead across high-value projects and programmes.
- Ensure effective implementation of risk management frameworks and methodologies.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
- Work closely with senior stakeholders, project directors, and clients to align risk management strategies with business objectives and project execution.
- Act as a trusted advisor to deliver clear, actionable risk intelligence.

Business Development
- Provide risk management input to bids, proposals, and tendering processes.
- Influence bid strategies to secure new opportunities for AECOM.

Risk Assurance & Reporting
- Conduct risk assurance checks to ensure high-quality risk management.
- Compile and distribute comprehensive risk reports for decision-making.
- Communicate critical risk insights to senior leaders and clients effectively.

Training & Coaching
- Mentor and coach team members in risk management best practices.
- Foster a culture of strong risk awareness within project teams.

Technical Implementation
- Facilitate the identification, assessment, and prioritisation of risks.
- Develop Risk Registers, Risk Management Plans, and Mitigation Strategies.
- Perform Quantitative Risk Analysis (QCRA/QSRA), including Monte Carlo simulations, to inform project contingency decisions.
- Design and implement risk management frameworks aligned with:
- ISO 31000
- Institute of Risk Management
- Association of Project Management (APM) standards
- Support cost management, scheduling, and change control functions as needed.

Team Management
- Lead a team of risk management consultants.
Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- At least a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (construction management, engineering, or risk management) from a recognised and accredited institution, or a recognised risk management qualification (e.g., MOR, APM Risk, or IRM).
- Demonstrated experience of leading risk management for capital projects within infrastructure or construction.
- Deep practical knowledge of managing risks in both UK and international markets.
Technical & Industry Expertise
- Proven expertise in using industry-standard risk management tools (e.g., ARM, Xactium, RiskHive, or Predict Suite).
- Strong ability to conduct Quantitative Risk Analysis using specialist tools such as Safran, Primavera Risk Analyser, or @Risk.
- In-depth understanding of project management frameworks (e.g., MSP, PRINCE2) and risk methodologies, particularly:
- ISO 31000
- Association for Project Management (APM) approaches to risk
- Institute of Risk Management standards
Experience & Competencies
- 5+ years’ experience of managing risks across:
- Multi-discipline project environments
- Large-scale infrastructure projects
- Cross-sector stakeholders (public and private)
- Experience running teams of risk professionals.
- Excellent risk communication and facilitation skills to assist teams in managing risks dynamically.
- Flexibility to travel and work across diverse sectors, attending client sites and variations in our portfolio.
Attendance Obligations
- Ability to attend mandatory Day 1 in-person onboarding at an AECOM office location as part of employment conditions.
Preferences (but not mandatory)
- Exposure to working with clients in Dover Clean Water Programme or other key AECOM portfolios.
Work Location & Flexibility
We are offering a hybrid work model, allowing work from AECOM’s offices, crew rooms, client sites, or remotely. AECOM provides full project controls tools, so location does not restrict impact.
