Job Description
About the Role
We’re recruiting a Project Director to join our risk management team based in our London, Manchester, Birmingham, or Bristol offices.
As a Project Director, you will lead risk management for AECOM’s major infrastructure projects across diverse sectors. You’ll uphold robust risk expertise, collaborating with senior stakeholders, internal teams, and external partners. Reporting to the Director of Programme Controls, you’ll oversee a team of risk consultants and play a key role in both UK projects and AECOM’s international portfolio.
This is a senior leadership position, demanding invaluable strategic, technical, and team management skills.
Responsibilities
Core Accountabilities:
- Act as the risk management lead for high-value projects and programmes
- Ensure effective implementation of risk management throughout project lifecycles
- Provide direct risk input during bidding and proposals to secure new business
- Conduct risk assurance checks to validate project and programme methodologies
- Present key risk data to senior executives for informed decision-making
- Produce comprehensive risk reports to support leadership
- Coach and mentor staff in best-practice risk management
- Facilitate risk identification, assessment, and prioritisation
- Develop and refine Risk Registers, Risk Management Plans, and Mitigation Plans
- Perform Quantitative Risk Analysis (QCRA & QSRA), including:
- Implementing Monte Carlo simulations
- Determining project contingency levels
- Designing and adapting risk management frameworks
- Offer expertise to cost, scheduling, project controls, and change management teams

Requirements
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Degree: Bachelor’s from a recognised university or equivalent risk management certification (MOR, APM Risk, IRM)
- Experience:
- Proven leadership within multi-discipline project environments (preferably in infrastructure, construction, or engineering)
- Proficiency with industry risk tools (ARM, Xactium, RiskHive, Predict, MMS, Risk Analytics Suite)
- Demonstrated expertise in Quantitative Risk Analysis, including tools like Primavera Risk Analyser, @RISK, Safran Solutions
- Experience implementing risk processes aligned with ISO 31000, Institute of Risk Management, or Association for Project Management (APM) standards
- Track record managing risk teams and advising client stakeholders
- Downloads:
- Travel flexibility and adaptability to multi-sector engagements
- Strong facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills
- In-depth knowledge of engineering, construction, and project management methodologies
