Job Description: Project Director (Risk Management)
Location & Office Options
We are recruiting for a Project Director to join our growing risk team at either our:
- London
- Manchester
- Birmingham
- Bristol offices.
The Role at a Glance
As a Project Director, you will be responsible for:
- Leading the risk management capability for AECOM’s major infrastructure projects across sectors.
- Working as part of the AECOM Integrated Programme Controls team, engaging with senior stakeholders, clients, and contractors.
- Supporting risk governance, decision-making, and delivering best practices to ensure project success.
You will:
- Manage an established team of risk consultants for UK projects, with opportunities to support global projects.
- Work closely with internal staff, client teams, and sub-contractors to assess risk exposure.
Key Responsibilities
In this senior position, your core tasks include:
- Acting as the risk management lead for high-value projects and programmes.
- Engaging with project teams to ensure effective implementation of risk management.
- Providing direct risk input for bids and proposals to secure new business.
- Performing risk assurance checks to validate project programme protection strategies.
- Reporting key risk data and producing insights for senior leadership.
- Creating stakeholder briefs for risk-related programme events.
- Conducting coaching and mentoring in risk management best practices.
- Facilitating risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies.
- Assisting in contingency planning and risk management framework design.
- Supporting cost, scheduling, and project control teams, and change management teams.
- Exploring innovative approaches to risk management.
- Exploring creative solutions to complex risk-related challenges.
- Influencing the development of risk strategies for critical projects.
- Conseking project priorities and approach against broader AECOM strategy.
- Collaborating with the client-focused approach to risk management.
- Managing service delivery standards against client briefs.
- Guiding ethical and sustainable enterprising risk-taking aligned with legislation.

Requirements & Qualifications
Experience & Background
Ideal candidates must bring:
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or a risk management qualification (e.g., MOR, APM Risk, or IRM).
- Proven multi-disciplinary project environment experience in major risk management.
- Proficiency in industry standard risk tools (ARM*, Xactium, RiskHive, PRED1Data etc.).
- Quantitative modelling experience including QCRA, QSRA, Monte Carlo simulations and tools like Safran, Primavera Risk Analyser @Risk etc.
- Strong ISO31000, IRM, or APM methodologies knowledge.
- Experience managing risk consultancy teams at the programme level in complex technological projects.
- Ability to travel and operate across multiple project sectors.
- Strong task facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Knowledge of fit-for-purpose tools used in construction and engineering management.
