Salary: Up to £80k Location: Hybrid – Warminster, 3 days per week on-site


About the Role

The Associate Security Architect is responsible for shaping and securing technology solutions while developing broader strategic, governance, and leadership capabilities. This role is ideal for experienced engineers, technical leads, or security specialists ready to advance into architecture.

The Associate Security Architect will collaborate with senior architects and engineering teams, contributing to solution design, security strategy, risk management, and architectural governance while building expertise across complex business and technology landscapes.

Key requirements include strong technical credibility, exceptional stakeholder engagement, and the ability to balance business objectives, operational needs, and security risks when designing practical solutions.


Key Responsibilities

Security Architecture

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of security architectures across programmes, systems, and services.
  • Apply recognised security architecture principles, standards, and patterns to new designs.
  • Assist in producing critical artefacts such as:
    • Security requirements and design documentation
    • Threat models
    • Architectural decision records
  • Participate in architecture reviews and assurance activities.
  • Embed security controls at all lifecycle stages.
  • Support the creation of strategic security roadmaps and architectural vision.

Design and Assurance

  • Conduct security assessments and architectural design reviews for systems, applications, and infrastructure.
  • Identify and mitigate security risks in consultation with engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with delivery teams to translate secure architectural designs into technical implementations.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, frameworks, and government security requirements.
  • Maintain technical oversight throughout project delivery.

Stakeholder Management

  • Engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders to clarify requirements and communicate architectural decisions.
  • Foster trusted relationships across engineering, operations, programme management, and customer teams.
  • Present practical risk and security recommendations in clear, actionable terms.
  • Champion balanced discussions between security, operational, and business outcomes.

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as a security subject matter expert within project teams.
  • Coach engineers in implementing security best practices.
  • Contribute to architectural governance forums and peer reviews.
  • Drive improvements in security and architectural practices.
  • Share expertise and lessons learned with cross-functional teams.

Development Outcomes

A successful Associate Security Architect will:

  • Take ownership of security-related design choices.
  • Earn recognition as a trusted collaborator among engineering and delivery teams.
  • Shape solution direction through technical influence and communication.
  • Proactively identify risks and propose practical mitigation strategies.
  • Reconcile security, cost, complexity, and operational trade-offs in recommendations.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experienced in security engineering, infrastructure, networking, cloud, software development, or systems engineering.
  • Hands-on participation in solution design, security reviews, or technical governance activities.
  • Proficiency in security architecture principles and secure-by-design methodologies.
  • Familiarity with risk management and security assurance practices.
  • Ability to analyse complicated technical challenges and propose pragmatic, practical solutions.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Comfortable in multidisciplinary, complex environments.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and collaborative.
  • Builds influence through expertise and persuasive communication.

Additional Growth Criteria

  • Broad system-level thinking beyond individual technologies or systems.
  • Understanding of how business requirements impact architectural decisions.
  • Capability to evaluate architectural options, risks, and trade-offs.
  • Curiosity in enterprise architecture, governance, and long-term strategy.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience with architecture frameworks (TOGAF, MODAF, SABSA, etc.).
  • Cloud architecture and cloud security patterns knowledge.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps and modern delivery methodologies.
  • Awareness of standards such as NIST, ISO 27001, Government Security standards.
  • Background in Defence, Government, Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), or highly regulated sectors.
  • Certifications in cybersecurity (e.g., CISSP, CISM, CRISC, CCSK).
  • Contributions to architectural governance boards or design authorities.

Career Progression
