Are you ready to shape the future of data?

Matillion is the company behind Maia, the AI Data Automation platform.

In the AI economy, demand for data is exploding. Manual data engineering can’t keep up. Maia fixes that by combining 15 years of data expertise with agentic AI to eliminate the manual work that slows data teams down. Organisations like Cisco, DocuSign, and Slack are already using it to deliver real business impact, faster.

We started in Manchester and now we’re global - with teams across the UK, US and India.

We are driven, curious, energetic people who move fast, think big and hold ourselves to a high standard. We’re here to make a dent in the universe bigger than ourselves. And we’re looking for people who want to be part of it.

We have a fantastic new opportunity for an Associate Software Engineer to join the team.

This is a great fit for someone at the very start of their engineering career, whether that's a recent graduate, bootcamp grad, or career changer, who's already hands-on with AI: building with it, tinkering with it, or using it seriously in their own projects or studies.

This is not a role where you will sit in the background waiting for permission to contribute. From day one you will be writing real code, solving real problems, and working alongside engineers who challenge each other to be better every day.

If you are early in your engineering career and want to work somewhere that moves fast, builds boldly, and takes AI seriously, this is your role.

We value in person collaboration here at Matillion, therefore this role will follow our hybrid work pattern of 2 days a week in our Manchester city centre office.

What you will be doing

  • Writing clean, tested, production-ready code across our platform
  • Working in an agile engineering team - sprints, standups, code reviews, and real delivery
  • Solving technical problems that directly impact our customers' ability to work with data
  • Using AI tools actively in your workflow - to research, to build, to move faster
  • Learning from engineers around you and contributing your own perspective from day one

What we are looking for

  • A foundation in software engineering - a degree, bootcamp, or self-taught background. We care about what you can do, not how you learned it
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language, ideally Java
  • Hands-on, active involvement with AI: you've built an AI-powered project, integrated AI tools into your studies or personal work, or experimented seriously with AI development, not just used ChatGPT occasionally. Come ready to show us what you've built or tinkered with
  • The ability to think independently and push through ambiguity
  • A desire to grow fast in a team that will challenge you every day

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Assessment Process

Here is what to expect:

Stage 1 — Screening

A short 20-minute AI-powered conversation you can complete on your own schedule. It’s an opportunity to share more about yourself beyond your CV to help us understand how you can add value - your approach to problems, and your interest in the role. It's also an opportunity to learn more about Matillion and the role. A human recruiter reviews every response — AI does not make hiring decisions here. If you’d prefer not to complete the AI interview, let us know and we’ll arrange a time for a recruiter to call you.

Stage 2 — Technical Test

A practical exercise designed to assess how you think and how you build. You are encouraged to use AI tools — we want to see how you use them. We will tell you exactly what to expect in advance.

Stage 3 — Team Interview

A conversation with your future manager and a member of the engineering team. We will go deeper on your technical thinking, how you approach problems, and how you work with others. We'll also explore how you’ll positively contribute towards our culture and values. This is opportunity for you to meet the team and understand the day in the life of a Matillion Engineer.

Stage 4 — Offer

A transparent breakdown of salary, equity, and benefits — everything you need to make the right decision.

We aim to move quickly. You will hear from us within 7 days of your application.
