Associate Ecologist – Arcadis
About the Role
Arcadis is the world’s leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. As part of their Ecology team, you’ll join over 50 experienced ecologists, contributing expertise across:
- Ecological surveys and assessments
- Soil, land use, hydrological, and sustainable drainage systems
- Arboriculture, ecosystem services, and natural capital
- Biodiversity strategies and metrics
- Cultural heritage advice
Over 30 years, the team has delivered 2,000+ high-impact projects across the UK and international clients including EDF Energy, Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales, Transport for London, and many more. Role span urban housing, infrastructure (railways, power stations), and sustainability-focused projects.
You’ll tackle climate change impacts like biodiversity loss, urbanisation, and extreme weather—positioning your work at the heart of environmental resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Client Engagement
- Lead and manage eco-projects to meet budget, deadline, and SHEQ goals.
- Act as Technical Director, overseeing ecological aspects of client relations.
- Provide expert guidance and technical advice to teams and clients.
- Participate in meetings, presentations, and bid submissions.

Technical & Compliance Expertise
- Approve project deliverables, ensuring technical accuracy.
- Conduct or oversee ecological surveys and data analysis.
- Produce Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), impact assessments, and biodiversity strategies.
- Advise on mitigation measures, monitoring strategies, and license applications.
- Liaise with statutory authorities for compliance assurance.
Team & Knowledge Leadership
- Supervise team members, deliver performance management, and provide training.
- Contribute to industry best practices and research initiatives.
- Develop survey standards and biosecurity protocols.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Essential:
- Experience in ecology, environmental management, or sustainability.
- Strong project management and commercial acumen.
- Deep knowledge of biodiversity metrics, impact assessment legislation, and ecological principles.
- Expertise in specific species groups with field survey skills.
- Fully consented PEAS, Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, and HRAs.
- Experience in bid production, client engagement, and team leadership.
- Equivalent to Master’s (or advanced degree) ideally related to the field.
- Member of CIEEM (Chartered Ecologist or progressing).
- Mitigation/survey licenses.
