What We're Looking For
- Insurance industry experience preferred
- Prior underwriting experience is helpful but not required
- Strong customer service and relationship-building skills
- Ability to analyze risk, make decisions, and manage competing priorities
- Backgrounds in claims, service, or other insurance-related roles are often a strong fit
Training & Schedule
- Structured virtual training program lasting 6 weeks.
- Training schedule is generally Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM EST.
- After training, schedules will be normal business hours, such as 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM - OR - 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
- This is a remote position
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite new and renewal Personal Lines business within authority
- Evaluate risks and make underwriting decisions based on company guidelines
- Build and maintain strong relationships with independent agents
- Partner with Sales, Claims, and other internal teams to support agency success
- Provide exceptional service while balancing quality, efficiency, and production expectations

Job Description Summary

As an Associate Underwriter, you will perform case underwriting activities (new and renewal policies) in support of more senior underwriters. Under close supervision and guidance, works within narrowly defined limits and authority on assignments of low complexity. You may also assist with projects and research by performing a piece of the overall work in support of more senior staff. We'll count on you to apply underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations to policy decision making.
Job Description Key Responsibilities:
- Gathers information from multiple sources according to company guidelines in order to support underwriting analysis.
- May require gathering verbal information or data through reports or other electronic means.
- Reviews individual risks for acceptability and handles those within authority based on company underwriting guidelines and standards.
- May perform analysis for others or in support of higher level underwriters.
- Completes assigned underwriting transactions and tasks within established time and service standards.
- Strives to complete all transactions in a first time final mode.
- Makes decisions to accept, modify or decline personal lines business of lower complexity in accordance with policies, practices, and standards.
- Determines the proper classification of risks to ensure the matching of price and product to the customer.
- Plans completion of assignments to meet agreed upon timelines and service level agreements.
- Consults with agents and internal partners.
- Recommends opportunities for business development and service capabilities.
- May participate in the management of agency performance as part of the underwriting team.
- Responds to requests with resolution within established time and service standard.
- Routes calls and higher level issues to appropriate individuals.
- May assists higher level underwriters with agency support activities.
- Participates in training classes, department and company meetings.
- May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships:
- Reports to Supervisor or Manager; no direct reports
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience:
- Two years related insurance experience preferred.
- Will consider undergraduate degree in lieu of experience.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Standard business policies, practices and procedures.
- General understanding of basic analytical and financial techniques preferred.
- Good verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts.
- Ability to recognize problems, determine appropriate action and implement solutions.
- Ability to prioritize own work/time.
- Ability to use PC and learn/use applicable systems.
- Ability to understand, perform and become proficient with automated and manual transactions.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

The national salary range for Associate Underwriter - Personal Lines: $46,345.00-$75,500.00
The expected starting salary range for Associate Underwriter - Personal Lines: $46,345.00 - $60,800.00
