Automation Engineer

St Ives, Cambridgeshire (with UK, Ireland & occasional international travel)

Up to £70,000 per annum (DOE)
Permanent, Full-Time

Rise10 Recruitment are currently recruiting for an experienced Automation Engineer to join a growing engineering business that is bringing automation capability in-house to support the delivery of complete turnkey solutions for its customers.

This is an exciting opportunity for an Automation Engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects from concept through to commissioning. Working as part of the Electrical team, you will play a key role in designing, developing, programming, testing and delivering bespoke automation systems across a variety of engineering projects.

This is a newly created position, offering the opportunity to make a real impact as the business continues to expand its internal automation capability. With plans for future growth, there is scope for the successful candidate to help shape processes, influence technical direction and support the development of a wider automation team over time.

The Role

As an Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for managing automation projects through the full lifecycle, from initial design and development through to installation, testing and commissioning.

  • Leading automation and control projects from concept and feasibility through design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning.
  • Designing and developing motor control systems, automated equipment, robotic cells, tooling, fixtures and bespoke machinery.
  • Programming PLC, HMI and SCADA systems from scratch, including Siemens and Allen Bradley platforms.
  • Supporting the integration of robotics, external devices and automated systems.
  • Producing Functional Design Specifications (FDS), technical documentation and project deliverables.
  • Designing electrical schematics, control panel layouts and backplate designs using ECAD tools such as EPLAN.
  • Creating and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions and technical documentation.
  • Preparing technical scopes, quotations and cost estimates for automation projects.
  • Supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and commissioning activities.
  • Providing technical support throughout installation, troubleshooting and production phases.
  • Working closely with customers, suppliers, project teams, manufacturing and engineering departments to deliver complete automation solutions.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve existing systems, reliability, efficiency and performance.
  • Researching and implementing new automation technologies and solutions.

About You

The successful candidate will have a strong background in automation engineering, with experience delivering projects across the full lifecycle.

  • 5+ years’ experience within automation engineering.
  • Strong PLC programming experience, including programming Siemens and Allen Bradley systems from scratch.
  • Experience with HMI, SCADA and industrial automation systems.
  • Experience designing electrical control systems and producing schematics.
  • Experience using CAD and schematic design tools, ideally EPLAN.
  • Experience supporting commissioning activities and customer-facing projects.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, hands-on approach.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, customers and suppliers.
  • A proactive mindset with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • A relevant engineering qualification is required. Electrical qualifications, testing and verification credentials, project management qualifications, and robotics experience would be advantageous.
  • A valid driving licence and passport are required due to travel requirements.

Travel & Working Arrangements

  • The role is based from the St Ives, Cambridgeshire headquarters, with approximately 20% travel required across the UK, Ireland, Europe and occasional international locations.
  • The majority of time will be office-based, however following successful completion of probation there is potential flexibility for up to 2 days per week working from home when focused on programming activities.
