Job title: Automation Engineer
Location: South Yorkshire
Salary: £35,000-£50,000 DOE + Excellent Benefits
Rise10 Recruitment is exclusively partnering with a well-established engineering organisation to recruit an experienced Software Automation Engineer. This is an exciting opportunity to join a business that designs and delivers highly engineered automation and motion control systems for customers operating within safety-critical industries.
Working on technically challenging, bespoke projects, you'll play a key role in developing software that controls complex machinery used across a variety of sectors.
The Role:
As a Software Automation Engineer, you'll be responsible for the design, development, testing, and commissioning of PLC and HMI software for advanced automation systems. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you'll support projects from initial concept through to commissioning, ensuring systems are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop PLC and HMI software for industrial automation systems.
- Produce technical documentation including Functional Design Specifications, User Requirements, and Cause & Effect documentation.
- Develop robust, scalable software using Structured Text and Ladder Logic.
- Design machine network architectures and industrial communication systems.
- Integrate software with electrical hardware, motion control systems, and distributed I/O.
- Test, debug, and optimise automation software.
- Commission systems both in-house and at customer sites.
- Support fault diagnosis, software improvements, and ongoing product development.
- Ensure compliance with relevant functional safety standards and engineering best practice.
- Work collaboratively with Mechanical, Electrical, and Commissioning Engineers to deliver successful projects.

About You:
We're looking for an experienced Automation Engineer with a passion for developing reliable control systems.
You'll ideally have:
- HND or Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Automation, or a related discipline.
- Experience developing PLC-based automation software.
- Strong experience with Allen Bradley PLCs and Rockwell Automation software.
- Experience using Studio 5000, Logix Designer, FactoryTalk View, View Designer, and RSView SCADA.
- Excellent knowledge of Structured Text and Ladder Logic programming.
- Experience with motion control systems, variable speed drives, and industrial networking.
- Strong understanding of distributed I/O, SCADA, and machine control systems.
- Experience commissioning industrial machinery in real-world environments.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

- CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+ certifications.
- Experience developing automation software for cranes, lifting equipment, or other heavy industrial machinery.
