Lead Automation Engineer – 12-Month Contract
Location: Nailsea, UK
About the Role
We are seeking a Lead Automation Engineer to oversee software and automation projects within industrial control systems. Your responsibilities will include designing, developing, maintaining and delivering PLC and SCADA applications, ensuring adherence to engineering best practices, project requirements, and compliance with regulatory standards. You will also collaborate with global engineering teams to drive efficient and high-quality deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the execution of software and automation projects within control system engineering environments.
- Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC and SCADA applications, including:
- Creating new applications from scratch
- Implementing source control and ensuring code quality through industry best practices
- Monitor and report on project progress, resource allocation, and provide technical input for project planning.
- Collaborate with global engineering teams to ensure deliverables meet contract specifications and regulatory requirements.
- Take ownership of key control system engineering deliverables, including:
- System Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
- Software Requirements Specifications (SRS)
- Software Design Documents
- System testing procedures
- Prepare and review project requirements, design specifications, software product requirements, and interface specifications.
- Develop and review software test requirements in alignment with engineering standards.

Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of automation engineering experience with expertise in PLC and HMI/SCADA technologies.
- Hands-on experience with:
- PLC programming
- SCADA systems (preferred experience with TwinCAT Soft PLC and Ignition SCADA)
- Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including:
- Modbus TCP
- CAN
- Ethernet UDP
- OPC UA
- Understanding of object-oriented design methodologies.
- Proficient in software development methodologies, engineering processes, and quality improvement practices.
- Experience using analytical tools for product/solution development.
- Proven track record in delivering automation/software projects (small to medium scale).
- Strong interpersonal, communication, reporting, and presentation skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with global teams and share technical knowledge.
- Willingness to travel and work at project sites, as required.
