Automation Maintenance Engineer

Automation Maintenance Engineer – Manchester

We’re seeking a skilled Automation Maintenance Engineer at our Manchester Mail Centre (M4 5AA) to uphold and optimise our advanced automation systems. This is an exciting role to support a major technological transformation within Royal Mail, revolutionising parcel sortation and shaping the future of delivery.

Salary & Benefits

  • Base Salary: £54,791 per annum (+ night shift allowance)
  • Bonus: Weekend supplements:
    • Saturdays: £54.73 per shift
    • Sundays: £109.47 per shift
  • ** Holiday:** 22.5 days per year, plus bank holidays
  • Pension: Defined contribution scheme

Contract: Permanent. Full-time (40 hours/week), shift-based attendance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain automation assets through preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects, taking projects from concept to implementation.
  • Collaborate with Engineering Managers and team leaders, logging faults and providing reports.
  • Diagnose and resolve automation breakdowns swiftly to minimise downtime and keep operations running smoothly.
  • Monitor machinery performance to enhance efficiency and work with stakeholders for improved output.
  • Oversee Continuous Improvement projects, specifically focused on optimising hub/mail centre machinery performance.

Shift Pattern (Flexible where Required)

  • Lates: 13:45 – 22:00 (Mon-Fri)
  • Earlies: 07:00 – 14:00 (Mon-Fri) / 18:00 – 07:00 (Sat to Sun)
  • Nights: 20:00 – 07:15 (Sun/Mon) / 21:45 – 07:15 (Tue-Sat)
  • Rest: 07:00 – 18:00 (Mon-Fri/Sat) & (Sun)

Shifts may include rotation flexibility for 24/7 coverage, along with voluntary overtime or additional shift adjustments when necessary.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified Electrical & Mechanical Engineer (minimum ONC Electrical Engineering / NVQ Level 3, or equivalent).
  • Experienced in maintaining automation equipment, with PLC knowledge highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Proactive team player who can work independently.
  • Full UK driving licence (for occasional site travel).

Selection Process
