Automation Maintenance Engineer – Romford Mail Centre, Sandgate Close, Romford, RM7 0AB
Salary & Benefits
£54,791 per annum, plus:
- Night shift allowance
- Weekend supplement (Saturday: £54 per attendance, Sunday: £109 per attendance)
- 22.5 days annual leave (including bank holidays)
- Defined contribution pension scheme
Shift Details
This is a Pool position with full-time hours (40.0 hrs/week). Voluntary flexibility is required to support 24/7 operations, including:
- Shift rotation system (exact pattern below)
- Standard shift: 06:30–15:00 (Mon–Fri)
- Reactive cover for Annual Leave/Sick Leave
Standard Covered Shifts:
- Early: 06:30–15:00
- Late: 14:00–22:20
- Night: 22:00–06:40
- Weekend: Saturday (06:30–18:00) & Sunday (06:00–19:00)

The Role
Royal Mail is modernising its parcel network through a major automated sortation push. You’ll play a key role in this transformation, ensuring seamless performance of investment-in automation equipment and contributing to future-delivery innovations.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance: Conduct preventative, predictive & corrective automation tasks
- Support: Partner with the Engineering Manager, Maintenance Team Leader & Engineering Team Coaches:
- Complete end-of-shift reports
- Log faults & input data
- Troubleshoot root causes of automated failures
- Improvement:
- Optimise equipment performance & output (collaborating with stakeholders)
- Drive Continuous Improvement projects (conception to implementation) for Hub/Mail Centre machinery
- Own-initiation: Balance self-direction with teamwork for operational goals

About You
We’re seeking an experienced multi-skilled engineer with:
- Techanical expertise: Minimum ONC (Electrical Engineering) / NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in both mechanical & electrical maintenance
- Health & Safety awareness: Direct experience in automated systems risk compliance
- Communication: Ability to simplify complex automation challenges clearly
- Mobility: Full UK driving licence (occasional site travel)
