Automation Maintenance Engineer – Bristol Mail Centre, Filton, BS34 7ST
Royal Mail is seeking a multi-disciplinary engineering professional to join our Automation Maintenance Engineer team at our Bristol Mail Centre. This is a chance to drive UK postal history forward with cutting-edge sorting automation.
We are transforming Royal Mail into a mostly-mechanised parcel system, requiring investment in next-gen automation. Your expertise will help shape the future of delivery in an era defined by escalating e-commerce demand.
Key Points
- Location: Bristol Mail Centre, Filton, BS34 7ST
- Starting Annual Salary: Over £55,000 (actual £54,791 per annum)
- Night Shift Allowance: Included
- Leave: 22.5 days paid leave + bank holidays
- Benefits: Defined contribution pension scheme
- Weekend supplement available for working Saturdays (£54.73) and Sundays (£109.47)
- Contract: Permanent
- Hours: Shift-based (approx. 40 hrs per week)
- Standard Monday-Friday 07:00 – 15:30 unless covering (includes late, nights & weekends at short notice)
The Role
You will keep Royal Mail’s advanced automation systems operational and optimised by:
- Conducting preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance to ensure machinery performs at its peak.
- Driving Continuous Improvement projects from initial concept to implementation.
- Collaborating with Engineering Manager and team leads.
- Completing detailed maintenance reports.
- Logging faults efficiently.
- Diagnosing and resolving automation failures to minimise downtime and keep industry-leading operations flowing.
- Monitoring equipment performance, identifying bottlenecks, and working with stakeholders to improve productivity.
- Taking leadership on highly visible Continuous Improvement initiatives, focusing on enhancing efficiency and machinery output.

About You
To thrive in this role and contribute to our vision, you must demonstrate:
- Qualification: A recognised Engineering NVQ (NQF Level 3 – Minimum) in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
- Technical Skills:
- Proven experience maintaining industrial automation systems, with a working knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
- Understanding of electrical/automatic control systems (mechanical stress, cooling, wear & tear management).
- Safety Awareness: Familiarity with UK Health & Safety legislation and adherence to procedures.
- Personality Traits:
- Ability to work autonomously or collaborate as part of a high-pressure team.
- Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
- Essential: Full, unrestricted manual UK driving licence (for site-to-site travel).
