What Is the Opportunity?

Join Travelers as we transform our Technology landscape. Our Software Engineering team enables a seamless customer experience through technology solutions.

As an Assistant Vice President, Software Engineering, you will:

  • Lead our Engineering team to accelerate growth and transformation of our Technology.
  • Strategically plan, influence, and execute the design, development, and implementation of complex problems.
  • Establish best practices and standards.

Travelers Europe currently offers flexibility to employees who wish to work on a hybrid basis, in accordance with our Hybrid Work Arrangements Policy. This entails:

  • Full-time employees working three days a week in the office and two days at home (or pro rata for part-time employees). (Policy may be changed at Company’s discretion.)

What Will You Do?

  • Leadership & Collaboration

    • Lead teams of Software Engineers, providing technical guidance and mentorship, while modelling Travelers’ leadership behaviours to foster a team environment.
    • Partner with businesses to:
      • Establish strategic direction
      • Develop product roadmaps
      • Provide technical oversight for large programmes
      • Implement optimal solutions to meet business needs
  • AI-Assisted Engineering Practice

    • Champion the adoption of AI-assisted development tools and practices across the engineering function (e.g., code generation, testing, and review), embedding these into team workflows to drive measurable gains in delivery speed and code quality.
  • Agentic Solution Development

    • Lead the engineering design and delivery of LLM-powered agentic solutions that enhance how users work.
    • Work with architects to refine architectural patterns.
    • Set standards for EUR Tech’s AI product capabilities.

  • Responsible AI & Governance

    • Ensure all AI and agentic solutions are designed and delivered within an appropriate governance framework, covering:
      • Model risk
      • Data handling
      • Transparency
      • Human oversight
    • Align with architecture and risk functions to ensure pacing with AI adoption.
  • Strategic Alignment

    • Align work with business and engineering priorities to achieve meaningful impact.
    • Build collaborative relationships with key leaders and peers to optimise resource usage.
  • Skills Development & innovation

    • Provide opportunities and challenges to enrich team members’ development.
    • Assess skill gaps and implement improvement strategies.
    • Equip individuals with skills, tools, and standard approaches to elevate overall engineering quality.
  • Technical Application

    • Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to solve software engineering problems.
  • Other tasks

    • Perform any additional duties assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

Experience & Qualifications

  • Ten years of related experience, including insurance / financial services industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing:
    • Current technology trends (e.g., cloud-based solutions leveraging microservices).
    • AI-assisted engineering practices and leading agentic solutions development, ensuring risk, data, and oversight alignment.

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Interprets internal/external business challenges and recommends best practices to enhance Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes.

  • Strong delivery skills, assessing and improving software design strategies. Ability to:

    • Devise, apply, and share approaches to ensure complex systems’ quality.
    • Incorporate awareness of cross-team workflows.
    • Develop widely used technical metrics for engineers.
  • Domain expertise with the ability to consult on business priorities and optimise value by:

    • Identifying business-aligned solutions.
    • Enhancing company capabilities through industry innovations.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, designing robust architectures resilient against system failures and proactively anticipating future needs.

  • Exceptional communication skills for:

    • Explaining technology concepts in business-friendly terms.
    • Effective documentation and cross-group collaboration.

What Is a Must Have?

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience via work experience.
  • Seven years of programming/development experience.
  • Five years of technical leadership experience.
