Job Summary

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to join our friendly and dynamic team, supporting the delivery of high-quality aseptic services for our patients.

The Cancer Services Division at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) provides world-class cancer care to patients from across the country. Our specialist oncology and haematology services are delivered by a multidisciplinary team of specialist pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and assistant technical officers.

As our service continues to expand, we are looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to help develop our aseptic service, which plays a vital role in the treatment of oncology and haematology patients.

The successful candidate will work as part of the Pharmacy Aseptic Team to help deliver a safe, effective, and high-quality aseptic service, contributing to excellent pharmaceutical care for our patients.

We encourage innovation and actively support learning and professional development, providing comprehensive training to help staff become skilled, competent, and confident in their roles. This includes the opportunity to complete the NVQ Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician qualification.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The post holder will:

  • Aseptically prepare cytotoxic medicines, monoclonal antibodies, and clinical trial products in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice.
  • Interpret prescriptions and generate worksheets.
  • Issue stock and maintain accurate stock control in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Undertake specialist cleaning duties within the aseptic cleanroom environment, including microbiological monitoring, maintenance of specialist equipment, and recording daily environmental and equipment parameters in accordance with SOPs.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSEs: Mathematics, English and Science (Grade C/4 or equivalent) and two other GCSEs (Grade C/4)
  • NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy Service Skills/Support Staff or equivalent
  • Have or are willing to work towards National Level 3 qualification (e.g. ILM Level 3 or similar) or hold knowledge/equivalent experience of pharmaceutical technical procedures acquired though training
  • Have or are working towards evidence of working accurately, such the West Midlands Dispensing Accuracy Assessment or equivalent

Desirable

  • University of Leeds -- Supervisory Skills for Technical Services
  • University of Leeds -- Aseptic Preparation and Dispensing of Medicines
  • University of Leeds -- Cleanroom Behaviour and Comportment for Aseptic Services
  • Accuracy Checking For Dispensing Assistants (National framework)

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience working in aseptic services
  • In-depth practical experience of aseptic work
  • Good understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
  • Understanding of pharmacy related computer systems
  • Understanding of Health and Safety at Work, manual handling and COSHH
  • Understanding of dispensing, stock control and supply systems and processes
  • Knowledge of drugs, side effects & where to find further information
  • Knowledge of safe and secure handling of medicines (SaSHM) requirements
  • Knowledge of stock control systems
  • Knowledge of code of practice/customer care
  • Understands the need for delivering a cost effective service and the required work practices to reduce waste

Desirable

  • Experience in staff training
  • Supervisory experience
  • Working Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems
  • Experience in audit
  • Aston 5 day course in Technical Pharmacy Training in Aseptic Processes / Leeds 5 day courseourse in Aseptic Dispensing and Preparation of Medicines or willing to complete
