Backend Engineer (Python / FastAPI) – Fast-Growing Sports AI Company

Remote role – 1 day a month in Central London

Build real-time, data-rich applications for the sports industry. Small, fast-moving team with high ownership and real impact. Work at the forefront of AI and LLMs applied to sport. Stack flexible, as long as you thrive in Python, FastAPI, and modern web tooling. Salary up to £100,000, depending on experience. Ideally, a genuine sports fan.

The Role: Backend Engineer

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll design and maintain the sophisticated APIs and data systems powering this company’s AI-driven sports products. You’ll work with real-time data at scale, translating complex sports logic into clean, efficient, high-performance code.

This is a hands-on, autonomous role in a small team where you own everything from design to deployment, with deployment and ongoing iteration fully under your control.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable APIs using Python and FastAPI.
  • Work with real-time data streaming (e.g., SSE, WebSockets).
  • Translate complex sports data and logic into efficient backend code.
  • Ensure systems are performant, reliable, and well-architected.
  • Own the entire lifecycle of your work, from deployment to iteration.
  • Collaborate closely with a high-calibre, small team to deliver quickly.

Essential Experience

  • Strong backend engineering experience, ideally with Python and FastAPI (flexible if comfortable in this environment).
  • Solid familiarity with PostgreSQL, Docker, and AWS.
  • Deep understanding of asynchronous programming and real-time data.
  • Exceptional system design skills, including solving complex problems from first principles.
  • Comfortable with the autonomy and pace of a small team.
  • A genuine sports fan who understands both the game and its data is highly desirable.
