You get to build something from scratch, and the people you build it for sit right next to you.
This is a greenfield project. No legacy codebase to wrestle with, no inherited technical debt to apologise for. You are designing and building from the ground up, owning the work across the full software lifecycle from architecture decisions through to production.
The firm manages over £2 trillion in assets under management, and engineering here is not a support function. It is a strategic one. That means your work carries real weight, and the decisions you make matter to the business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will be working in modern Java, using current versions and building things the right way. AWS sits at the heart of the infrastructure, so you will be working with cloud-native tooling throughout. You will get the opportunity to utilise AI keeping you exposed to the cutting edge of your field. What makes this role different from most back-end positions is the proximity to the front office. You are not throwing tickets over a wall. You are sitting close to the people who actually use what you build, understanding their problems directly and shaping the solutions yourself.
