Backend / Data Engineer — Cricket Analytics (TypeScript · PostgreSQL · Applied Stats)

Backend Intelligence Engineer

(Contract or Full-Time • Remote • AI-Native Cricket Intelligence Platform)

We're an AI-native cricket intelligence platform. Our engine processes ball-by-ball data, encoding it into pre-computed analytics used by professional coaches, analysts, and franchises — including several T20 franchises and the European T20 Premier League, where we serve as the technology partner.

We’re a small, senior team focused on precision. You’d collaborate directly with our lead developer on the core intelligence layer: the nightly pipeline that computes the metrics underlying all of our work.

What You’ll Do

  • Extend and refine our library of pre-calculation tables — tweaking parameters, thresholds, and computation logic as our models mature.
  • Design and develop new tables end-to-end:
    • Define the metric specification → schema → aggregation logic → integration into the nightly dependency graph.
  • Write statistical logic that’s both correct and defensible:
    • Sample-size thresholds for robustness.
    • Bayesian smoothing for data sparsity.
    • Z-scoring, confidence tiers, and fallback hierarchies to ensure reliability.
    • No shortcuts: typed, tested, and idempotent migrations.
  • Maintain a relentless focus on correctness over speed.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong TypeScript/Node.js expertise — fluent in strict, fully typed codebases.
  • Deep PostgreSQL mastery — skilled in:
    • Hand-written SQL.
    • Window functions, aggregations, and query performance tuning.
    • Disciplined migration practices (using raw pg, no ORMs).
  • Applied data science/statistics background — you should be able to:
    • Translate a metric definition into statistical aggregation code that’s mathematically sound, not just "functional."
    • Care about correctness over solved problems.
  • Passionate about clean architecture — preferring robust over fast.
  • True textbook-level understanding of cricket — no fluff: we need a cricketer’s pathos (or else)!

Nice to Have (Priority: Depth > Breadth)

  • AWS experience (e.g., Lambda, S3).
  • Experience in sports analytics, quantitative modelling, or any field where precision trumps anything else.

Not Needed

  • Front-end development.
  • React or full-stack breadth.
  • Experience with trivial metrics; we’re after deep domain + technical proficiency.

Get in Touch

Send a short note and anything proving you think about data like a statistician: a project, a repo, a problem you fixed. Explain how you’d transform a metric definition into reliable code.

(Example: "I rebuilt their player fatigue model with ABC.")
