About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Backend Engineer specializing in PHP to join a dynamic and entrepreneurial technology company based in Fareham. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work within a fast-paced environment focused on high-tech solutions such as security, data backup, and cloud storage platforms. The successful candidate will be pivotal in designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend systems that support the company’s innovative product offerings. Initially, the role is office-based for the first three months to facilitate onboarding and team integration, after which it transitions into a hybrid working arrangement. The position involves collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including project managers, front-end developers, and system administrators, to ensure seamless system operation and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
- Proven experience in backend development with a strong focus on PHP (PHP5+), demonstrating a solid understanding of object-oriented programming principles.
- Proficiency in MySQL for database design, optimization, and management.
- Experience with version control systems, particularly Git, to facilitate collaborative development and code management.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies, including Scrum, and a strong commitment to Test-Driven Development (TDD) practices.
- Knowledge of web technologies such as XHTML, CSS, and jQuery is advantageous.
- Experience working within Linux-based environments, particularly LAMP stack.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and efficient backend systems using PHP within a dedicated LAMP environment.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including planning, coding, testing, and deployment, with a focus on Agile practices and TDD.
- Implement and optimize database schemas, queries, and data migration strategies to support high-performance applications.
- Collaborate with front-end developers, project managers, and system administrators to deliver integrated solutions.
- Ensure system security, data integrity, and storage management through proactive monitoring and maintenance.
- Assist in systems optimisation and performance tuning to improve application responsiveness and scalability.
- Contribute to code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing to uphold high coding standards.
- Leverage modern development tools and practices, including PHPUnit, Selenium, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, to enhance development efficiency and deployment processes.
